Our cycling tours along the Romantic Road

This is how beautiful the Romantic Road is

Fairytale Cycling
Along Germany’s most popular holiday road, the “Romantic Road” cycle route runs from Würzburg to Füssen. Drive on partly asphalted, partly water-bound surface, sometimes also on small side roads and over cobbled alleys to romantic half-timbered towns, castles and palaces.

Fairy tales and stories of castles and castles
Which building is the most impressive? Which castle is the most beautiful? The Prince-Bishop’s Residence in Würzburg is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and with its spatial sequences planned by the Würzburg court architect Balthasar Neumann a highlight along the way. Giovanni Battista Tiepolo was once called from Venice and decorated the vault in 1752/53 with the largest ceiling fresco in the world. The keep of the old castle of Wertheim offers an incomparable view down to the Main and Tauber and the richly decorated half-timbered houses of the town. In the romantic Tauber Valley you will find pure romance: Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Walk around the half-timbered town wall and, before everything seems too romantic, visit the medieval crime museum. Scares guaranteed. In Schillingsfürst a princely baroque castle awaits you, in Dinkelsbühl the completely preserved old town, in Harburg a medieval castle complex. Worth seeing patrician houses are in Donauwörth, in Augsburg you will find three architectural styles: Gothic, Renaissance and Rococo. It is followed by the Rococo jewel and UNESCO World Heritage Wieskirche, one of the most famous pilgrimage churches in the world and lavishly furnished with stucco. The royal palaces of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau form the crowning finale.

Open-air stages in front of historical walls
In addition to the interesting buildings, cultural enthusiasts can also discover plenty of open-air stages on the Romantic Street, where theatre plays, concerts, operas, operettas and musicals are performed. This abundance is certainly unique. Open air is played in front of magnificent backdrops such as medieval buildings, castles or cloisters in numerous places along the Romantic Road

such as Wertheim, Weikersheim, Röttingen, Rothenburg, Feuchtwangen or Dinkelsbühl.

Enjoyment route
The cuisine is as diverse as the regions along the Romantic Road. That is why the route is also called pleasure route. Bratwurst or Schäufele are typical dishes in Franconia. In the Taubertal, which belongs to Franconia and Baden-Württemberg, mule exchange, spätzle, onion cake and greens are also served. Carps from the surrounding ponds are available in the months with R in the name. They are served blue or baked. Now it is becoming more and more Bavarian, a veal shank with dumplings, white sausages and a white beer or “Obatzda”, spicy cream cheese seasoned with paprika, caraway and fresh onions, are on the menus. After all, the Allgäu is all about milk: mountain or brick cheese and Emmental cheese taste spicy and go well with the local Spätzle. Bavaria is a beer country, but in Franconia, in addition to the largest brewery density in the world, you will also find fine Franconian wines such as Silvaner or Müller-Thurgau in the Bocksbeutel. In the Taubertal, the dark Tauberschwarz is cultivated, an old, autochthonous grape variety, i. e. one that originated here and was first bred here.

Enchanting nature
The nature along the Romantic Road will enchant you: visit the unique courtyard garden of the Residence in Würzburg and marvel at the Franconian vineyards. Wine landscapes also line the path in the lovely, wildly romantic Tauber Valley, along with orchards and fields. On the Muschelkalk slopes, sailflowers and the toothed wing bleaching flutter, stone bars stretch into the valley. The Nördlinger Ries is a huge meteorite crater that is now covered with juniper heath and dry grass. The UNESCO Global Geopark Ries offers exciting insights into the history of the earth. The lech should become more natural again and be able to carry sand, gravel and rubble with it. In Lechrain you have almost reached the pre-Alpine landscape of the Allgäu: green hills, brown cows, blue lakes and in the background the majestic Alps.
