For trained people
Sporty and fast-paced, these cycling tours are designed for well-trained riders, and you should be prepared to tackle some challenging climbs along the way. Strong legs and good stamina are definitely required!
Sporty tours in Northern Germany
-
Our sporty cycling tours take you through northern Germany, for example from Hamburg to Lübeck – from one Hanseatic city to another – from the famous “Michel” in Hamburg to the Holstentor in Lübeck, along the coast and past Baltic seaside resorts on excellently developed cycle paths. Hanseatic spirit ahoy!
-
Along the River Weser from Hann. Münden to Bremen, you could of course ride at a leisurely pace – but you can also pick up the speed and add a few more kilometers, tackling the cycle path in a more athletic way. Longer and more demanding stages along the most beautiful section of the Weser Cycle Path offer pure sporting enjoyment. We also offer the sporty Weser route as an extended tour all the way to Cuxhaven – reaching the North Sea and the Wadden Sea.
Sporty Cycling in Western Germany
- From Aachen, you can cycle through no fewer than three countries and along two rivers: Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands, following the Rur and the Meuse. On this tour, you’ll spend a bit more time in the saddle each day than on our standard routes – and/or pick up the pace. Challenge guaranteed.
- Even river cycle paths, which are generally considered easy and leisurely, are available in more demanding versions: Try the Lahn Cycle Path in a sporty style, for example. From its spring in the Rothaar Mountains to where the Lahn flows into the Rhine, you’ll cover the entire route in just four days. Go ahead and give yourself a well-deserved pat on the back! Including arrival and departure, the whole trip takes six days.
- The same applies to our short Moselle tour: four days, three nights, two cities. Wow! You’ll cycle from Trier to Koblenz, covering daily distances of between 76 and 82 kilometers through magnificent wine-growing regions. In the evening, you can toast your achievement with a glass of Moselle wine.
- From Mainz to Cologne, you’ll ride swiftly along the Rhine through the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley. Glide past medieval castles and famous vineyards. With stages ranging from 64 to 72 kilometers, this tour is well suited to trained cyclists – after all, river valleys are usually nice and flat. Along the Rhine and the Nahe, we also offer a sporty winegrowers’ tour through four wine regions: Rheinhessen, Rheingau, Nahe and the Middle Rhine. Castles and palaces – plus three wine tastings – are included. Cheers!
Sport in the South: Bavaria
- The River Main and the villages and towns along its banks are wonderfully diverse – a true treasure chest. Cycle at a brisk pace from the Franconian beer and cathedral city of Bamberg all the way to Aschaffenburg in Lower Franconia with its impressive Johannisburg Palace – from beer to wine and finally to “Äbbelwoi” (apple wine). There are more than enough sights to discover along the way.
- At Lake Constance – also known as the “Three-Country Sea” – our sporty short tour takes you on a circular route from and back to Constance through Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The cycle paths are mostly smoothly paved and largely flat. The shimmering blue lake is almost always in view.
- Staying with Bavarian lakes: Ammersee, Wörthsee and Forggensee are the highlights of this sporty tour starting in the Fugger city of Augsburg. You will also follow the wild River Lech along the Via Claudia Augusta and finally the Romantic Road. Neuschwanstein Castle, Andechs Monastery and the Wieskirche are just a few of the prestigious landmarks awaiting you along the route.
- You can explore the lakes of the Allgäu region on a sporty, hilly hub-based tour starting at Lake Weissensee, staying at the charming Boutique Hotel Dreimäderlhaus: no daily packing and unpacking, and full focus on athletic stages through the Alpine foothills to world-famous castles and fortresses – and, of course, delicious Allgäu cheese.
- Romantic and sporty? Absolutely. Ride swiftly along the Romantic Road, visiting Würzburg and its Residence Palace at the start, then the Tauber Valley with Rothenburg, Dinkelsbühl and Augsburg, and finally the fairytale castles of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau. There are a few hilly stretches along the way – and at the end, you’ll find yourself standing before the Alps. Magnificent!
Central European, sporty, fast-paced
- Right in the heart of Europe, you’ll ride straight through flat landscapes – but with a few more kilometers than usual through Austria: Starting in the German town of Passau, you cycle briskly along the Danube all the way to Austria’s capital, Vienna. Go ahead and dance a Danube waltz – you’ll have covered 70 to 85 kilometers per day. Simply leiwand, as a Viennese would say. In other words: fantastic!
- Also in Austria, our sporty and charming cycling tour along the Tauern Cycle Path awaits you. This means you’ll be riding at a slightly faster pace than on the “standard” version while staying in carefully selected, romantic charm hotels. A wonderful combination, don’t you think? From Salzburg – famous for its sweet “Salzburger Nockerl” – you cycle all the way to the Hohe Tauern National Park.
- On Switzerland’s Lake Maggiore, you’ll feel as if you’re in Italy. Here we offer a sporty radial tour, meaning you stay at the elegant Albergo Losone with its beautiful pool landscape. We can imagine how you might relax after your daily rides. From there, you explore the Ticino region: the castle town of Bellinzona, Ascona – known for its film festival – Lugano on Lake Lugano, and the Maggia Valley. Bellissimo!
- Looking for even more Swiss lakes? On this sporty cycling holiday, starting from Constance on Lake Constance in Germany, you’ll discover Lake Zurich and Lake Walen, the Principality of Liechtenstein, St. Gallen, and the Rhine Falls before returning to Constance. A circular tour, with a few hilly sections included.
- From Prague on the Vltava River to Passau at the confluence of the Danube, Inn and Ilz rivers, this river-rich cycling route takes you through three countries: the Czech Republic, Austria and Germany. Medieval towns, castles and palaces, the Bohemian Forest and finally the Danube accompany you along this – admittedly – demanding route.
Sport in the South
Our southern routes for sports enthusiasts are all located in Italy and Portugal.
- From Porto to Lisbon, you ride briskly along Portugal’s Atlantic coast and through the hinterland. Covering around 100 kilometers per day, with some challenging climbs, you’ll reach the lagoon of Aveiro, the palaces and castles of Sintra, and the famous town of Nazaré – once a small fishing village, now known worldwide as the place where surfers gather each year to wait for the biggest waves.
- From Lisbon, you could even continue on to Sagres, the most southwestern point of Europe. Cycling more or less along the Atlantic coast, you head south over gently rolling terrain, passing charming fishing villages, crossing the Costa Vicentina Natural Park, and encountering bizarre rock formations and towering cliffs. Gaze westward across the Atlantic – there’s nothing but open ocean until America. A true sense of vastness will take hold of you.
- On the Portuguese “Flower Island” of Madeira – the garden in the Atlantic – you cycle a demanding circular route starting and ending in Caniço. Expect punchy climbs along the sea, panoramic mountain roads, and stretches beside the famous levadas (irrigation channels). In doing so, you’ll experience the full diversity of this wonderful island and its varied landscapes.
- In southern Italy’s Apulia, this sporty cycling tour takes you from Alberobello to the baroque city of Lecce on the Adriatic coast, passing the UNESCO-listed trulli houses and lively towns such as the white city of Ostuni, Gallipoli and Otranto. “Puglia sì, dieta no!” is a popular local saying – Apulia yes, diet no! Look forward to culinary delights par excellence and indulge without regret. You’ll easily pedal off the extra calories.
- From Salzburg in Austria to Grado in Italy – once the seaport of Roman Aquileia and still bearing traces of its Austro-Hungarian past – you cycle swiftly along the Alpe-Adria Cycle Path. Alps and Adriatic, mountains and sea, rivers and lakes, Austria and Italy – this route truly has it all.
- And what comes to mind when cyclists hear “Tuscany”? Steep climbs, of course – hills crowned with castles and charming hilltop towns, country roads through olive groves and vineyards in the Chianti region. Tutto molto bene! On this sporty route, you’ll ride to Florence and Lucca, to the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and to the medieval towers of Siena.
Bike & Boat – The Sporty Way to Travel
- Bike, boat and sport – what could be better suited than the Greek islands? This tour takes you across the Ionian Islands of Corfu, Lefkas, Kefalonia, Ithaca, Meganisi and Paxos. The cycling routes lead through hilly terrain up to 500 meters above sea level. Your floating hotel, the MS Panagiota, is always by your side.
- The deluxe motor yacht Erato brings you to the Saronic Islands of Poros, Spetses and Hydra, to the Methana Peninsula and Aegina, as well as to the Peloponnese. Luxury and sport – a perfect combination, wouldn’t you agree? And there is certainly no shortage of fascinating ancient sites.
- Turquoise waters and beautiful islands await you in the Adriatic! The moderate bike-and-boat tour through the Kvarner Bay tempts you with varied cycling stages (13–55 kilometers) and the chance to cool off in the Mediterranean after your ride. On board your ship, the MS Kasimir, you’ll feel completely at ease – and in the evening, you can gaze out at the waves with a glass of wine in hand.
