With over 82,000 inhabitants, Constance is the largest city at Lake Constance and has maintained its long tradition as a city of trade and culture. The cultural city is characterized by many historic buildings, such as the "Cathedral of Our Lady", which was the cathedral of the Bishops of Constance and served as the meeting room of the Council of Constance (1414-1418). Another highlight is the theater, which is the oldest permanent stage in Germany (400 years old).
Cathedral of Our Lady, Constance
The Cathedral of Our Lady is a former bishop's church in Constance. This building is one of the largest Romanesque churches in southwest Germany, a three-aisled pillar basilica with a cross-shaped floor plan, which was consecrated in 1089. As the tallest building in the old town, it still shapes the cityscape.
With an area of 45 hectares, the Mainau is the third largest island in Lake Constance. Because of its extremely rich subtropical, partly also tropical vegetation, the Mainau is also known as the flower island in Lake Constance.
The Pfahlbaumuseum Unteruhldingen is an archaeological open-air museum, which is located on the shore of Lake Constance, with a museum building. It is the oldest open-air museum in Germany. The Freilichtmuseum contains several reconstruction sections and has been rebuilt several times since the opening of the museum in 1922. Since 1922 over 10 million visitors have visited the pile houses.
Lindau has a lot to offer on the mainland and on the island. The most famous sight in Lindau ist the harbor entrance: the ensemble of Bavarian lion and lighthouse. The old town is located on the island. With its centuries-old buildings, lively squares and picturesque alleys, it exudes Lake Constance flair. On the promenade you can spend your time in one of the numerous cafés.
With the Pfänder-Panoramagondel you hover quickly and comfortably to the mountain station at Pfänder (1064m). The unique panoramic view of Lake Constance and the 240 Alpine summits of Austria, Germany and Switzerland make the Pfänder the most famous vantage point in the region.
Stage at the lake in Bregenz
In particular the play on the lake on the world's largest lake stage (as of 2005) in the Lake Constance is a draw for a large number of visitors. It is known for the beauty of the natural setting of Lake Constance, oversized stages, technical pieces of the cabinet and a unique acoustics achieved by the Bregenzer directional hearing technique.
