tour
Arrive early, because Constance has a lot to offer: Set off on a leisurely stroll through the city and take a look at the many sights. Even today, the Council City still has a medieval feel. The city's landmark is the Imperia, a memorial to the prostitutes of the Council period. The Imperia stands directly on the harbour, from where you can enjoy the wonderful view over Lake Constance.
The Untersee awaits you today: the route takes you through picturesque villages to the medieval town of Stein am Rhein. Admire the many houses with frescoes, murals and bay windows, the old town gates and the medieval-looking alleyways. Stein am Rhein was rightly nicknamed the "Rothenburg of the High Rhine". Visit the Lindwurm Museum, which covers 1500 square metres of bourgeois living and agriculture around 1850.
Take your time and stroll through the picturesque town of Stein am Rhein and continue to discover the medieval town. Then set off on your cycle tour along the Untersee, enjoying the magnificent view of the Untersee again and again, before you reach the small town of Radolfzell with its charming flair. Bishop Radolf founded his "Cella Ratoldi" in 826, where Radolfzell's landmark, the cathedral with the highest church tower on the whole of Lake Constance, stands today. Stroll through the pretty town and enjoy the fantastic view of the Untersee and towards the island of Reichenau.
After breakfast, you cycle over the Bodanrück with wonderful views of Lake Überlingen. You should plan a break in the small but charming town of Bodman with its magnificent castle park. You then get back on your bike and reach the picturesque town of Sipplingen and the idyllic Birnau monastery church. This beautiful baroque church attracts many thousands of visitors every year and is sure to impress you too. In Unteruhldingen, you should take time to visit the pile-dwelling museum.
Today, Meersburg is the first stop on the programme: numerous sights and medieval buildings await you here. Visit the Old Castle, the oldest inhabited castle in Germany and also the last residence of the poet Annette von Droste-Hülshoff. Don't miss the New Castle with its magnificent staircase by Balthasar Neumann and the market square, which is lined with picturesque half-timbered houses. From Meersburg, the route takes you to Friedrichshafen, always accompanied by the beautiful Alpine panorama. Once you arrive in Friedrichshafen, you should use the time to take a stroll around the town and visit the famous Zeppelin Museum before choosing one of the many restaurants for a cosy end to the day's cycling.
Today's destination is Bregenz or Höchst, and you will first travel to Langenargen. Here you will see the suspension bridge, which is considered a small model for the famous Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. You cycle through extensive orchards to the Bavarian island town of Lindau. Island town because Lindau's old town centre is located entirely on an island. You should not miss a tour of the town and admire the beautiful lakeside promenade with its lighthouse and lions at the famous harbour entrance. Cycle around the Bay of Bregenz and reach the festival town of Bregenz with its famous lake stage. Take a cable car ride up to the Pfänder today and enjoy the unique view of Lake Constance from up here (1064 metres).
Today you cycle through the nature reserve of the Rhine delta and cross the Swiss border. The medieval harbour town of Rorschach, which was granted market rights as early as 947 and developed into the most important trading centre on the southern shore of the lake in the Middle Ages, awaits you. The granary, which was put into operation in 1749, is considered Rorschach's landmark and is the most beautiful granary in Switzerland. Today it houses an interesting museum. You spend the night on the Swiss shore in an area that is still characterised by fruit and berry cultivation.
Your last day on the bike belongs to the foothills of the Thurgau Alps. You can look forward to small villages and huge orchards and therefore plenty of scenic variety. Enjoy the marvellous views of Lake Constance and let the impressive foothills of the Alps accompany you on the Lake Constance cycle path to Constance.
After breakfast, your wonderful deluxe stroll around Lake Constance comes to an end. We will be happy to book additional nights for further discoveries.
