Winter check for your own bike
To ensure your bike runs smoothly again in spring, it is worth doing a little maintenance before storing it away.
First, give it a thorough clean: remove dirt, salt and dust from the frame, chain, sprockets and rims – ideally using warm water, a mild cleaner and a soft brush. Then leave it to dry thoroughly. Next, give the drive some TLC: lightly oil the chain, leave it to soak in, then wipe off any excess oil – this will keep everything smooth and rust-free.
If you ride an e-bike, you should also take good care of the battery: charge it to about 50–60%, store it in a dry place at 10–15 °C and check the charge level once a month, recharging if necessary. Tyres will benefit from 3–4 bar air pressure and being stored off the ground – ideally, the bike should be hung up. A quick technical check with slightly tightened screws and checked brake pads rounds off the winter service.
The storage area should be dry, frost-free and well ventilated. A breathable cover protects against dust, but please do not use an airtight tarpaulin – otherwise there is a risk of condensation. And if you also ride in winter, you should regularly remove road salt from your bike and clean and oil the chain more often. This will keep your bike in top condition – and you can get back on the road right away in spring.
A tip from our mechanics: take advantage of the quieter months! In late autumn, winter or spring, the workshops are much less busy. When the weather is bad, your bike can often be given a quick service without an appointment.
