By the way, the wine and beer garden in the Hotel Weisser Bär is probably one of the most beautiful places in Mülheim. This radial tour on the Central Moselle simply offers pure relaxation!

Hotel Weisser Bär

1. day Mülheim/ Mittelmosel Arrival

Individual arrival in the heart of the Moselle wine-growing region in Mülheim (approx. 5 km from Bernkastel-Kues). Surrounded by sun-drenched vineyard terraces and steep slate slopes, the Weisser Bär Wellness & Genusshotel is idyllically located directly on the Moselle Riverside. Your rental bikes, if booked, are ready for you at the hotel.

2. day Trittenheim round tour 46 km

Look forward to your first bike excursion, enriched by famous wine towns. You cycle on the left side of the Moselle on the flat Moselle cycle path to the small wine town of Trittenheim, known for its vineyards Trittenheimer Altarchen. Here you change to the right side of the Moselle and then cycle again in the direction of Bernkastel-Kues. A few kilometers later, Neumagen-Dhron, one of the oldest wine towns in Germany, beckons. Do you notice the stone relief on the roadside in the center of the village? It is a replica of the famous stone relief "Wine ship with happy helmsman", which was the tomb of a Roman wine merchant. Then the Moselle cycle path takes you quickly to the lovely wine town of Piesport. Marvel at the Roman wine press just before Piesport, which is one of the oldest and largest north of the Alps today. Stroll through the town with its charming little houses, in which wine has often been pressed for centuries. Just a few kilometers further on, you can visit a sparkling wine factory in Wintrich, before cycling the last few kilometers along the banks of the Moselle back to the hotel.

3. day Round tour Bernkastel-Kues & Traben-Trarbach approx. 59 km

Today the two famous Moselle towns of Bernkastel-Kues and Traben-Trarbach are waiting for your visit. Marvel at the old town of Bernkastel-Kues. Today you have time for a stroll through the old town streets. Marvel at the somewhat sloping market square with its stately half-timbered houses. The worth seeing place presents itself like a piece of jewelery. If you want, you can borrow an audio guide from the tourist office which will guide you through Bernkastel-Kues for 3 hours. But you still have a lot to do, because after a good 20 km in the flat Moselle valley, Traben-Trarbach welcomes you with its imposing city gate. Marvel at the many architectural treasures, Art Nouveau and the Belle Epoque. Enjoy the flair and charm of the town. We can also recommend a visit to the wine museum before you get back on your bikes to cycle back to the hotel on the other side of the Moselle. On the way, it is worth making a stop in Zeltingen at the Machern monastery with its wonderful beer garden.

4. day Excursion Maare – Mosel cylce path approx. 61 km

In the morning you cycle to Bernkastel-Kues (5 km) and get on the cycle bus to Daun. 1.5 hours later you are standing with your bike in the middle of the beautiful Eifel. A first challenge - the ascent to the viaduct located 28 m above the health resort – will be mastered quickly. You will be rewarded with a fantastic all-round view. Today you follow the well-signposted Maare-Mosel cycle path all day. It is one of the most famous and most beautiful railway cycle routes in Germany. You cycle through the mountains of the Vulkaneifel on the old railway line between Daun and Bernkastel-Kues back down into the Moselle valley. Without much effort on the paved and largely traffic-free cycle path, you will pass four long, illuminated tunnels and cross two large viaducts. For most of the maars you must leave the cycle path, but the 6.8-hectare wood maar with a water depth of 21 m is located directly on the Maare-Mosel cycle path. Take your time for this natural attraction. A hiking trail leads around the 325 m wide Holzmaar, which is idyllically situated in the dense beech forest. Then you roll down towards the Moselle valley. Since there are no steep inclines or slopes, the route is suitable for all cyclists and offers a special kind of cycling fun.

5. day Weinbergs-Achter 38 km

Today two different round tours lead you through the vineyards to the right and left sides of the Moselle. These two round trips are completely independent of each other. You can therefore cycle one of the two round trips or both, depending on your mood. On the 20 km long round trip to Monzel, a total of 340 altitude meters have to be mastered. In the Moselle village of Lieser, it goes straight into the gently rolling vineyards of the side valley and a first stop at the Siebenborn monastery is worthwhile. You continue to the wine town of Monzel and there, at the highest point of this tour, you will be rewarded with a fantastic panoramic view of the Moselle valley in front of you. In the midst of the vineyards, you roll down from here to Kesten and to top it off, slightly elevated in the middle of the steep slope "Brauneberger Juffer" with the most beautiful view back to Mülheim.

On the 18 km round tour through the former county of Veldenz you cycle through one of the most beautiful side valleys of the Moselle and master 240 altitude meters. From Mülheim you cycle slightly higher on vineyard trails to Veldenz. After a few kilometers you will reach the wine village of Burgen, which is often referred to as the “Little Venice of the Middle Moselle” due to its 19 bridges. After a short jaunt through the Frohnbachtal you cycle through vineyards back to Brauneberg in the Moselle valley.

6. day Mülheim departure

The beautiful time on the Central Moselle passed far too quickly. If you want to stay longer, you are welcome to book additional nights or spend more days in beautiful Trier.

Parking at the hotel

The Hotel Weisser Bär in Mülheim offers good parking options. The outdoor parking space at the hotel is available free of charge. An underground parking space is available for 10,00 € (as of December 2022) per day.

Condition of the bike paths

The quality of the Moselle cycle path is excellent. There are practically no unpaved or poorly navigable stretches of road. The route runs almost exclusively on paved paths and is consistently signposted.

The Maare- Mosel cycle path is paved, largely traffic-free and is one of the most famous and beautiful former- railway cycle paths in Germany. As the main attraction, the route leads through four long, illuminated tunnels and crosses two large viaducts. During the tour it goes up and up at the beginning, a total of 160 meters in high but always with a moderate gradient of max. 3 % and the enjoyment predominates on this stage, because to the Moselle valley there will be at least 450 meters altitude downhill again!

At the Weinbergsachter to the Wehlener Plateau a total of 228 altitude meters must be mastered. From Wehlen the route leads continuously and partly steeply uphill to the Wehlener Plateau. Once at the top, you first continue comfortably in the flat forest and then through the vineyards spectacularly downhill into the Liesertal. On the round tour through the former county of Veldenz, the vineyards are your constant companions, and the gentle ascents and descents add up to 240 meters altitude in the end.

tour highlights

Trittenheim Wine Trail

Take an interesting and educational short walk (1 km) along the Trittenheim wine trail. Placed signs provide information about the grape varieties grown. The walk leads from the center of the Laurentius street through the vineyards to the newly restored Laurentius Chapel with a beautiful view. The wine trail then curves back to Trittenheim. On the way you will find the most important information about cultivated vines, the climate, and the wine. Around 300 hectares around Trittenheim are mainly planted with the noble Riesling white wine grape. Duration approx. 30 minutes.

Trittenheimer Weinlehrpfad

Bernkastel-Kues

Bernkastel-Kues is a well-known wine culture center on the central Moselle. The city is a state-approved spa. The medieval market square in Bernkastel is worth seeing with its gabled half-timbered houses from the 17th century, among which the narrow-pointed house from 1416 stands out in particular. Several well-preserved buildings and the Renaissance town hall from 1608 are grouped around the St. Michaels fountain from 1606.

Bernkastel-Kues

Neumagen-Dhron

Neumagen-Dhron claims, along with several other places, the title of Germany's oldest wine village. The wine-growing village of Neumagen was founded by the Romans about 2000 years ago as a stopover on the route from Trier to Koblenz along the Moselle; One of the places of interest is the archaeological trail, on which guided tours are also offered on a regular basis. In the center of the Neumagen district there is a cast of the Roman wine ship right next to the old St. Peter's Chapel and the Ausonius Garden.

Neumagen-Dhron

Piesport

At the edge of the most famous Piesporter vineyard, the "Piesporter Goldtröpfchen", remnants of Roman wine presses were found during land consolidation work, the size of which suggests an area that was already important at the time. The Piesporter sights include the baroque parish church of St. Michael with its elaborate ceiling paintings, the rock massif "Mosel Loreley", a Roman milestone, several chapels, and crossroads as well as old winegrowers' houses and monastery courtyards.

Piesport

Kloster Machern

Opposite Zeltingen in the middle of the vineyards lies the former Cistercian monastery of Machern. The monastery complex offers a wide range and is therefore definitely worth a visit. There is a toy museum, an icon museum, a brewery, the Crypt distillery, a baroque hall, a chapel and much more. Enjoy regional wines, distillates, and freshly brewed beers from the house brewery.

Kloster Machern

Maare-Mosel-Radweg

Cycle over 55 km away from road traffic from Daun through the Mosel- Eifel region and the Säubrenner town of Wittlich to Bernkastel-Kues. The former railway line, with a maximum gradient of 3 %, is particularly suitable for recreational cyclists and families. There is a lot to discover along the entire route. You drive over huge viaducts, through beautiful landscape areas and illuminated tunnels. Well-tended rest areas, countless view points and the local gastronomy invite you to linger or have a picnic.

Maare-Mosel-Radweg

Traben-Trarbach

Traben-Trarbach, the jewel on the Central Moselle, once got rich from the wine trade. Large wine cellars and magnificent Art Nouveau villas await you. Enjoy the excellent wine directly at the winemaker's during a wine tasting or in the good local gastronomy. During an underground tour through the wine cellars, discover the mystical Traben-Trarbacher underworld and learn all kinds of interesting facts about the history of historical viticulture and old cellar technology. Visit the Grevenburg ruins, the Mont Royal fortress ruins and the Wolfer monastery. A visit to the numerous museums is also recommended.
