Highlights

Aachen - Baths and Science City
The city of Aachen can look back on a 2000-year history with many sights. Even the Romans settled in Aachen, because they appreciated the thermal springs, which are located below the present city center.

Monschau
Monschau, with its historic old town, was founded by cloth makers in the 18th century. There is much to discover in this town with its half-timbered facades and winding streets.

Kronenburger Lake
The Kronenburger Lake was created between 1973 and 1976 as a joint project between North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate. It primarily serves as a flood retention basin for the 77 km² catchment area of the Kyll River, protecting Kronenburg and the towns below it in Rhineland-Palatinate.

Kasselburg Eagle and Wolf Park
High above the Kyll river, the Kasselburg castle towers on a massif of dolomite and basalt rock. Its striking double residential tower makes the 12th-century castle a landmark of the region. In addition to the well-preserved ruins, the Eagle and Wolf Park delights visitors with bird of prey flight shows and the largest semi-wild wolf pack in Western Europe.

Bitburger Brewery
The most famous company and landmark of the city is the Bitburger Brewery. The Bitburger Brewery is one of the largest breweries in Germany.

Porta Nigra Trier
The Porta Nigra (Latin for Black Gate) in Trier is a former Roman city gate.

Tour

It's worth arriving in Aachen early – there's lots to discover in this cathedral city. In 1978, the cathedral became the first German building to be listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Take a leisurely stroll to visit the historic town hall and the new city museum, and be sure to try the famous “Aachener Printen” gingerbread cookies, which are a treat not only at Christmas time.

Leave the lively city of Aachen via the Vennbahn, one of the longest railway cycle paths in Europe, and quickly forget the hustle and bustle of the big city. A constant back and forth between countries begins: on this section, the cycle path crosses the border between Germany and Belgium several times. Enjoy not only the landscape, but also the delicacies of the region – Döppekooche, Belgian waffles, or French fries. After these culinary delights, you can look forward to the half-timbered houses of Monschau.

Today, cycle through one of the most impressive natural landscapes in Central Europe – the High Fens. The high moorland landscape not only offers unspoiled nature and unique tranquility, but also magnificent views into the distance. In the morning, you leave the narrow streets of Monschau and follow the gently ascending cycle path through a mosaic of moors, heathland, and stream valleys. In the evening, enjoy the peaceful idyll of Lake Bütgenbach – perhaps with a refreshing Belgian beer on the terrace of one of the cozy restaurants on the shore. The perfect end to a day full of nature experiences.

Leave the idyllic lakeside behind you and start a relaxed stage full of natural delights – disused railway lines, wooded hills, peaceful streams and the 27-hectare Kronenburger See lake. Today, you switch from the Vennbahn Cycle Route to the Kyll Cycle Route and cycle through the volcanic Eifel region, shaped by elemental forces. Gerolstein, famous for its mineral springs, is a highlight on today's mostly gently rolling cycle path. Even from a distance, today's destination, the spa town with its striking rock face – the “Gerolstein Dolomites” – is impressive.

The rugged rock formations with the famous “Munterley,” at a height of 482 meters, offer a breathtaking view over Gerolstein and the Kyll Valley as far as the Vulkaneifel. With a wistful eye, you cycle into the narrow Kyll Valley in the morning and follow the Kyll Cycle Route, mostly running directly alongside the river through narrow valleys, forests, and picturesque villages such as Kyllburg and St. Thomas with their old monasteries and railway bridges. The Bitburger Land then welcomes you with rolling hills and your destination for the day, the brewery town of Bitburg. In the Erlebniswelt (world of experiences), you will discover with all your senses what makes the draft beer brand so special: “Bitte ein Bit” (One Bit, please).

On your last day of cycling, you are spoiled for choice:
The longer, more scenic tour takes you along the Nims, Prüm, and Sauer cycle paths to Germany's oldest city, Trier. Rivers and streams dominate the landscape today, winding their way through the low mountain range.
If you opt for the shorter tour, you will continue on the Kyll Cycle Route. Gently downhill, you will cycle through the idyllic southern Kyll Valley, mostly along rivers, nestled between wooded slopes, meadows, and small villages.
Whichever route you choose, you will quickly reach the Moselle and cycle the last few kilometers to the imperial city of Trier, where numerous Roman buildings await your discovery – a journey back in time to Roman antiquity.

After breakfast, it's time to say goodbye, unless you have booked an extra night in Trier. For those who want to return to Aachen, we recommend our convenient return transfer service, which will take you and your luggage and private bikes from the hotel in Trier back to the starting hotel.
