From Bayreuth to Mainz
The Main meanders in large curves from its two sources in the Fichtelgebirge and Franconian Alb mountains to its confluence with the Rhine. The Steigerwald and Spessart forests force the river to make huge bends along the way – which is good for you, because it means there is even more to discover on the cycle paths along the Main.
Start your cycle tour on the Main Cycle Route in Wagner's city of Bayreuth, not far from the source of the Red Main. In Kulmbach, the two source rivers soon merge to form the Main itself. On the route to Mainz, you will experience a wide variety of ever-changing impressions – both scenic and cultural. Wine alternates with hops, metropolitan regions such as Würzburg and Frankfurt alternate with monastic tranquillity and forest-dense romantic magic. The Main Valley stretches for more than 500 kilometres. The World Heritage city of Bamberg lies along the way, as do countless villages that sometimes seem forgotten by time. Striking stops along your route include Schweinfurt, Volkach, Karlstadt, Miltenberg and Aschaffenburg.
