Round trip around the southern Black Forest

A relatively new cycle route, opened in May 2009, is the Southern Black Forest Cycle Route, which takes you around the Southern Black Forest Nature Park. From the extensive plateaus near Hinterzarten, the cycle route leads towards Titisee and the Wutach Gorge. Both natural beauties not only offer wonderful landscapes, but also invite you to enjoy sporting activities such as swimming and hiking. The route continues on the Bähnle Cycle Route, a former railway line that has been converted into a wonderfully flat cycle path. After a few kilometres downhill, you will reach Grimmelshofen and the famous ‘Sauschwänzlebahn’ railway, which invites you to enjoy an unforgettable ride through the wild and romantic Wutach Valley. Between Waldshut and Basel, you can experience the Upper Rhine on the second section of the Black Forest Cycle Route – with a detour to Kaiseraugst in Switzerland and its impressive Roman settlements.
Even more culture awaits you in Basel, where you will also cross the newly built Three Countries Bridge between Switzerland, France and Germany. The cycle route then continues north along the Rhine to the sunny and wine-rich Markgräflerland region. Be sure to allow a few hours to stroll around and enjoy the beautiful old town of Freiburg.
