Highlights

Hann.Münden
Hann.Münden is rich in restored half-timbered houses (over 700 in the historic town centre) and boasts medieval churches (St. Blasius, St. Ägidien). Impressive buildings of the so-called Weser Renaissance also enrich the image of the town. The Guelph Castle and the historic town hall are particularly worthy of mention.

Corvey Castle
Corvey (also known as Korvey) is a former Benedictine abbey in Höxter in what is now North Rhine-Westphalia. Corvey was one of the most important Carolingian monasteries, it had one of the most valuable libraries in the country and numerous bishops emerged from the abbey. Corvey played a decisive role in the first missionary attempts in Scandinavia. Ansgar, the "Apostle of the North", was educated here.

Pied piper house in Hameln
The Pied piper house in Hameln is one of the most famous houses in Hameln's old town and one of the most magnificent buildings of the Weser Renaissance. It is located at the junction of Bungelosenstraße and Osterstraße. Its present façade was built in 1602.

Minden waterway junction
The Minden waterway junction is a crossing of two waterways in Minden, East Westphalia. Here, the Mittelland Canal is guided with two trough bridges over the Weser Valley and the Weser River, which is about 13 m lower down, thus overcoming the gully without locks. The canal bridges are 320 m and 341 m long respectively and span the river and the Weser meadows. This allows 211 km of free navigation on the canal and also on the Weser. Connections via two lock routes make it possible to switch between waterways at this crossing.

Bremen Town Musicians
The Bremen Town Musicians is the title of a fairy tale set in the Lower Saxony region of Bremen.

Tour

Look forward to Hann.Münden, for there is much to discover here: Half-timbered houses from over six centuries and thus magnificent buildings of the Weser Renaissance. A stroll through the old town, which is well worth seeing, is a must!

Start your first stage by bike in a cheerful and upbeat mood. Take a worthwhile break at the small former monastery church of the Benedictine monastery of Bursfelde, visit the open-air mill museum in Oberweser, which is well worth seeing, and marvel at the historic town hall at the harbour and the impressive brine and graduation works in Bad Karlshafen.

The Solling, the second largest contiguous forest area in Northern Germany, flanks your beautiful cycle route in the morning. Enjoy the sight of Fürstenberg Castle, known worldwide for its porcelain manufactory, before you reach Corvey Monastery. Take a break in this venerable former Benedictine abbey dating from 822. After a short cycle route, the next cultural highlight awaits: Bevern Castle - one of the most magnificent buildings of the Weser Renaissance. In the afternoon, treat yourself to another break in Bodenwerder - the town of the "Liar Baron Hieronymus von Münchhausen" before you are captured by the medieval atmosphere of the Pied Piper town of Hameln. Marvel at the exemplary renovation of the historic old town, which proudly presents numerous buildings in the architectural style of the Weser Renaissance.

The well-signposted and flat Weser Cycle Path takes you today first to Rinteln with its charming Weser Renaissance old town. The valley becomes narrower and narrower, and a detour to Bad Oeynhausen, the only state spa in North Rhine-Westphalia, slowly beckons. The spa gardens and the "Jordansprudel" are well worth a visit. Be amized by the largest carbonated thermal spring in the world, whose fountain shoots from a depth of over 720 metres at 36 degrees Celsius under its own power to a height of up to 42 metres. Finally, the valley becomes very narrow at Porta Westfalica, where the Weser Cycle Path squeezes through the Wiehen and Weser Mountains. In Minden, it is worth taking a break in a café and, above all, visiting the waterway junction. The Minden waterway junction is a crossing of two waterways (here the Mittelland Canal crosses the Weser, which is around 13 m lower down). Take an interesting boat tour with lock from the Schachtschleuse before cycling the remaining 9 km to the hotel in Petershagen.

From today onwards the landscape changes as you cycle into the North German Plain.  You cycle via Stolzenau with its renovated town centre and old half-timbered houses to the old town of Nienburg. Discover the town in a different way: a bear track leads you to the historical sights! Then cycle through small villages with brick-red houses to Hoya. Of the many castles and palaces built by the Counts of Hoya, only the one in Hoya itself remains. However, the castle, which lies directly on the Weser, received most of its present appearance in the 18th and 19th centuries, when the old family of counts had long since died out.

You will quickly reach your first destination of the day, the equestrian and horse town of Verden. Take a short city tour through the beautiful old town and visit the cathedral. Built between 1290 and 1490 as a three-aisled Gothic hall church, the cathedral is one of the most successful Gothic church buildings. Afterwards, you will roll across the flat countryside, enjoy meadows like green carpets, catch sight of windmills and, again and again, isolated farms. Look forward to your stay in Bremen. You should plan enough time for this old Hanseatic city. The pflaster stones of the market square form a large Hanseatic cross. Here befinds the Roland statue and the city's most famous historical buildings. The town hall and Roland alone, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004, are worth every trip. And just around the corner await the Town Musicians, known the world over and treasured as good luck charms.

When the Weser silted up in the 19th century, business flourished in Brake. Ships from all over the world unloaded their cargo here because they lacked the "hand's breadth" of water under their keel to continue their journey to Bremen. So Brake still has a maritime past today. Visit the maritime museum in the telegraph tower. With the help of ship models, nautical instruments and tools of the sailmakers and shipbuilders, you can learn more about the shipping history of the Lower Weser. Under the protection of the dyke, you continue to roll northwards and enjoy the fresh wind, the smell of salt in your nose and the cries of the seagulls. In Bremerhaven it is worth visiting the "Schaufenster Fischereihafen", a cultural and communication centre with small shops, arts and crafts, restaurants and a sea-fish cooking studio.

Now you can feel it quite clearly, you are on the North Sea coast! For the first 9 km you cycle through the large overseas harbour with its huge facilities and free port flair. You cycle past old lighthouses directly along the coast. Enjoy the Wadden Sea, the wonderfully white beach dotted with colourful beach chairs and the fresh sea air. Visit the Wadden Sea National Park Information Centre in Cuxhaven, as it offers even deeper insights into this cultural landscape. Stroll to the harbour bulwark "Alte Liebe" and marvel at the museum lighthouse "Dicke Berta".

Today your beautiful Weser trip ends in Cuxhaven after breakfast at the hotel. You can simply leave your rental bikes at the hotel and set off on your journey home without a care in the world. If you would like to return to your starting hotel in Hann. Münden, we recommend our practical return transfer service including bike transport.

Condition of cycle paths
The Weser bike trail is one of the best cycle routes in Europe. In surveys conducted by the Allgemeiner Deutscher fahrrad-Club (ADfC - General German Cycling Club), the Weser cycle path has become the most popular cycling route in Germany! Most of the time the bike trail runs parallel to the Weser waterway: especially between Hann.Münden and Rinteln it makes the special charm of this bicycle route. Large sections of the Weser bike track are well developed, paved bike trails, farm roads, or at least roads with separate routing paths. Occasionally short sections lead over country roads with less traffic. There are hardly any sections where you have to drive on unsurfaced roads. Often there are bike trails along both the banks of the Weser River. Especially between Hann.Münden and Werder you can pick the site and take the ferry to switch banks. However, the official Weserradweg bike route leads only on one side of the river.

Transfer back to the starting point of the journey
Daily at 1.30pm there is the possibility to transfer back to Hann.Münden with a small bus (with bike trailer).
