Moselle, Rhine, Ahr, Kyll - a sporty round trip

Welcome to Koblenz, where the Rhine and Moselle rivers converge at the Deutsches Eck. Take advantage of your arrival day to stroll through the historic old town with its charming alleys, cozy cafés, and lively squares. A walk along the Rhine and Moselle promenades or a visit to Ehrenbreitstein Fortress with its magnificent panoramic view is the perfect way to get in the mood for the cycling days ahead. The best way to round out the evening is with regional specialties and a glass of wine at one of the many restaurants or wine bars.

You’ll begin your cycling tour at a leisurely pace on the superbly developed Rhine Cycle Route. As you ride along the river, you’ll be accompanied by impressive castles, palaces, and historic buildings that tell the story of the Rhine Valley’s rich history. Towns such as Sayn, Neuwied, Andernach, Namedy, Brohl, and Bad Breisig, with their cultural attractions, invite you to make interesting stops along the way. Between Bad Breisig and Remagen, the route passes through the so-called “Golden Mile,” a particularly fertile landscape along the Rhine. Thanks to the mild climate, vineyards, orchards, and expansive vegetable fields thrive here, shaping the valley and creating a special atmosphere. After the first few kilometers along the Rhine, you’ll leave the large river valley behind and reach the sun-drenched Ahr Valley. In Bad Neuenahr, you’ll be greeted by well-maintained parks and the relaxed atmosphere of this traditional spa town. Afterward, it’s worth taking a stroll through the historic old town of Ahrweiler with its well-preserved city wall, picturesque half-timbered houses, and cozy alleys. The twin town of Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler is considered the center of Ahr winegrowing and charmingly combines wine culture, history, and a zest for life.

On the Ahr Valley Bike Trail, you’ll follow the course of the Ahr River through the region’s famous wine country. Picturesque wine-growing villages such as Dernau, Rech, and Mayschoß line the route, and their unique atmosphere invites you to take short breaks. With every kilometer, the valley becomes more unspoiled: the slopes grow closer together, and striking rock formations lend the landscape an impressive character. In Ahrdorf, you’ll leave the Ahr Valley and switch to the Kalkeifel Bike Trail. Passing green meadows and small villages, the route leads through the idyllic Ahbach Valley. A special highlight is the Dreimühlen Waterfall, whose moss-covered limestone formations rank among the Eifel’s most remarkable natural phenomena. You’ll then cycle along a former railroad right-of-way, climbing steadily but comfortably through the Eifel landscape. Along the way, the mighty Kerpen Castle greets you from its hilltop, serving as a reminder of the region’s eventful history. Shortly before Hillesheim, you’ll reach the highest point of the stage. This small Eifel town charms visitors with its historic town center and its unique crime-novel atmosphere. With Germany’s first crime-novel hotel and the famous Kriminalhaus - home to an extensive collection of crime novels - an unusual and entertaining stop awaits you here. You'll be staying in Hillesheim or Gerolstein.

The striking Munterley rock formation offers impressive views of Gerolstein and the picturesque Kyll Valley. You’ll then follow the Kyll Bike Trail through the diverse Eifel landscape with its forested slopes, narrow valleys, and charming towns like Kyllburg and St. Thomas. In the Bitburg region, you’ll finally reach the famous brewery town of Bitburg, which is perfect for a relaxing lunch break.
For the rest of the route, you have two attractive options to choose from: The shorter route leads mostly downhill through the idyllic Kyll Valley to the Moselle and on to Trier. Germany’s oldest city captivates visitors with its numerous Roman monuments and lively old town. Those who opt for the longer, more challenging route follow the Nims, Prüm, and Sauer rivers through the picturesque landscape of the Southern Eifel. Both routes ultimately lead to Trier, where the eventful history of the Roman era can be experienced at every turn.

Today you’ll discover the Moselle with all its scenic and cultural charms. The route takes you past the ruins of a Roman villa rustica, through historic wine-growing villages, and along the many vine-covered slopes that define the landscape of the Moselle Valley. A special highlight is Neumagen-Dhron, Germany’s oldest wine-growing village, whose long tradition of viticulture dates back to Roman times. Along the way, cozy cafés, rustic wine taverns, and traditional wine bars invite you to take enjoyable breaks. Relax as you follow the course of the Moselle before finally reaching Bernkastel-Kues. The historic old town is one of the most beautiful along the Moselle and captivates visitors with its picturesque market square, lovingly restored half-timbered houses, and the magnificent Renaissance town hall. Don’t miss a view of the famous “Spitzhäuschen,” which has been one of the region’s most recognizable landmarks for centuries.

Today, you’ll enjoy a leisurely bike ride right along the Moselle, passing through well-known wine-growing towns such as Zeltingen and Traben-Trarbach. Traben-Trarbach, in particular, impresses with its magnificent Art Nouveau buildings, which serve as a reminder of the golden age of the Moselle wine trade. Time and again, vineyards, idyllic stretches of riverbank, and charming views of the Moselle’s meanders alternate. Passing through Enkirch with its lovingly preserved half-timbered houses, the route continues to Bullay, where you can marvel at the unique two-story Moselle bridge for rail and road traffic. Another highlight awaits you in Beilstein, one of the most beautiful towns on the Moselle. This romantic little town, with its narrow alleys, historic houses, and picturesque market square, is often referred to as the “Rothenburg on the Moselle” - and for good reason. Here, you can fully savor the special charm of the Moselle Valley.

If you still have some energy left, it’s worth taking a detour to the impressive Eltz Castle (+ approx. 4 km). This picturesque medieval castle is one of the most beautiful and best-preserved castles in Germany and is a true highlight of the region. You’ll then follow the Moselle through the wine-growing villages of Kobern-Gondorf and Winningen before the valley gradually opens up and you cycle toward your destination. At the famous Deutsches Eck, you’ll finally witness the impressive confluence of the Moselle and the Rhine and enjoy the last panoramic view of your trip.

In the late afternoon, you’ll return your rental bikes and can pick up your luggage at our partner hotel in Koblenz.
