Trier - the oldest city of Germany
6 days of cycling without changing the hotel - a radial tour on the Moselle cycle path.
Trier - a beautiful and meaningful city influenced by the Romans. The Porta Nigra is the best preserved Roman city gate north of the Alps, the Imperial Baths and the amphitheatre, which was built 100 AD and had a capacity of 20,000 spectators. On three cycle stages you can experience the beautiful Moselle, the famous Saar and sporty ambitious people can even cycle to the city centre of Luxembourg, which is considered one of the capitals of the European Union.

1. day Arrival Trier
You should plan enough time to visit the historic city centre, the Imperial Baths and the Porta Nigra. If you arrive by car you can park your vehicle at the hotel. If our arrive by train you travel to Trier mainstation. No matter how you arrive, your booked rental bike is ready for you at the hotel and is waiting to show you the lovely Moselle Valley.
2. day Excursion to Saar 49 km
Today we recommend a train ride to Mettlach (duration 41 minutes). In Mettlach you should visit a world company, thousand-year history, centuries of tradition and trend-setting home décor- all this is encountered in the Villeroy & Boch adventure centre. We recommend to change to the left side of the Saar in Mettlach and cycle 4 km up the Saar in the middle of the famous Saarloop. Get off the bike and climb up to the Cloef on Schuster's rapping. From up here you can enjoy a fantastic view of the famous Saar Loop. Back on your bike, follow the Saar cycle path towards the Moselle. You should definitely plan a nice break in the interesting place Saarburg before you roll over Konz back to Trier.
3. day Moselle Cycle path to Trittenheim 42 / 62 km
Look forward to the beautiful and well-developed Moselle cycle path. You cycle comfortably in the flat past the Old Ferry Tower from Schweich to Mehring. Here we recommend a break at the historical remains of Villa Rustica before continuing on the way to Trittenheim. You can arrange the return trip to Trier individually, either by bike for the sporty riders or by boat from Trittenheim. Alternatively, cycle from Trittenheim on the other bank of the Moselle to Schweich (20 km). From Schweich you can go by train back to Trier.
4. day Trier with guided tour
Today you leave your bikes at the hotel and experience Trier on foot on a city tour. Get to know the history of this wonderful city, which was already founded by the Romans. Visit the Porta Nigra, the remains of Roman bath houses, a stone bridge over the Moselle and many other sights.
5. day Moselle Cycle path from/to Nennig 42 km / Luxemburg 74 km
Today you can explore the Moselle upwards. In the morning we recommend a train ride to Nennig (duration 40 minutes). Nennig is famous for it´s Roman villa and its beautiful mosaic floor. In 1852 a farmer came across mosaic stones that turned out to be parts of a representative Roman mosaic floor. The ground was probably in the large reception hall of a magnificent villa urbana. So you have the choice. Either you visit the Roman villa and then cycle 42 km comfortably on the Moselle bike path back to Trier or you cycle in the morning directly from Trier upstream to Nennig and continue the tour there with a bike trip to Luxembourg City (+32 km for sporty riders). In the evening you go back to Trier by train (duration 50 minutes).
6. day Trier departure
Time passed too quickly. Trier has much more to offer. Book an extension of your cycling trip in Trier or follow the Moselle cycle path to Koblenz. It's worth it!

Condition of cycle path
The quality of the Moselle bike path is very good. There are practical no unpaved or poorly developed path. The route runs almost exclusively on paved roads and is very well signposted. The volume of traffic varies, but between Trier and Cochem there is almost always a seperate bike trail on the right or left shore side, off the main road. The Saar cycle path is almost always flat, right on the riverbank of the Saar, mostly on a separate paved or finely graveled bike path. Along the route, you will find numerous information boards that will help you find your way around with detailed map sections. In short, the Saar cycle path is perfectly developed with high path quality.

For the newly arrived guest, the Porta Nigra is the best place to begin a tour of Trier. The gate dates back to a time (about A.D. 180) when the Romans often erected public buildings of huge stone blocks (here, the biggest weigh up to six metric tons).
Going to the baths was an important part of Roman life: Over 1600 years ago, the Romans built one of the grandest and most impressive baths in the world: the Imperial Baths. Today you can visit this gigantic bathing facility: go back in time to the Roman era, descend into the subterranean labyrinth and get a feel for history!
The High Cathedral Church of St. Peter of Trier is the oldest episcopal church in Germany and the mother church of the Diocese of Trier. The important sacral building of Western architecture has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1986. With a length of 112.5 meters and a width of 41 meters, the cathedral is the largest church building in the city of Trier.
The Saar loop is one of the most famous place to be of the region Saarland. The nicest view you will find at the viewpoint Cloef in Orscholz. It is located 180 m above the river. But there are also very nice views from the bank side of the river.
Take a break in Mehring, at the Roman villa. Villa rustica is a country house or estate in the Roman Empire. With its corner towers and the colonnaded hall, the villa reflects the Roman residential culture of the 3rd century. The villa is open all year and freely accessible.
Nennig is known for a villa urbana, with magnificent mosaic floors. The main building of the villa had a total width of 140 m; with the changing halls and bathing facilities, the magnificent palace measured a total of 650m. The 160 m² mosaic (15.65 x 10.30m) is of impressive realism and is considered to be the largest, most beautiful and best preserved north of the Alps. Until now there is no documented information about the start of construction of the magnificent villa. However, the coins found, the texture of the masonry, the wall plaster and the floor itself suggest an early period of the Roman Empire. The villa - or another building - probably stood here earlier, because during excavations one also found parts of a forerunner structure.
Boat trip on the river Moselle
The Moselle travels a total of 520 kilometers from its source at the Col de Bussang in the Vosges to its mouth at the Deutsches Eck in Koblenz - the air-line between the source and the mouth is only 278 kilometers - overcoming a gradient of 676 meters. As a true European river, it flows through France for the first time on a route of 278 kilometers, forming a natural border between Luxembourg and Germany over 36 kilometers in order to flow into the Rhine after 206 kilometers in Rhineland-Palatinate. The Moselle is navigable from Thionville in Lorraine to 392 kilometers, however, 15 dams with locks are necessary to compensate for the difference in altitude. The "White Fleet" in the Moselle region offers very special experiences: behind every bend, there is a new view of steep vineyards, romantic villages and historic sights. From the tour over extensive day trips to the romantic evening ride with music ranges the range of steamers and excursion boats.
