Highlights

Würzburg
If I could choose my place of birth, I would consider Würzburg’, wrote author Hermann Hesse, and it’s not difficult to see why. This scenic town straddles the Main River and is renowned for its art, architecture and delicate wines.

Würzburg Residence
The Residence Palace is one of Europe’s most renowned Baroque castles and has been registered as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site in 1981. The castle was built by Balthasar Neumann and includes a much acclaimed staircase with awe inspiring frescos by the Venetian artist Tiepolo.

Veitshöchheim Palace and Court Garden
The summer palace of the Würzburg Prince-Bishops, built in 1680/82, was enlarged in 1753 by Balthasar Neumann. The rooms furnished in 1810 for Grand Duke Ferdinand of Tuscany with their rare paper wall-coverings are a highlight of the interior.

Lohr - Town of Snow White
In Lohr locals will tell you references of the Snow White tale. The “Gate of Spessart” which is thought to have been the opening to the escape route for Snow White as she vanished “on seven hills”, the Mountain Trail (Wieser Strabe). The journey through the seven Spessart Mountains from Lohr would have taken her to the kingdom of the Seven Dwarfs.

Wertheim
The town of Wertheim-am-Main is located along the banks of the Main River, where it meets the River Tauber. With a population of just over 24,000 inhabitants, Wertheim is a picturesque, medieval German city that is perfectly suited to arriving river cruise passengers. First mentioned in 779, Wertheim underwent several name changes throughout the intervening centuries before officially receiving township status in 1976.

Tour

This town it's worth it to arrive early in the day to see all the famous sights such as the Residence and the Fortress Marienburg.

A day full of discoveries. After just a few kilometres, you’ll reach Veitshöchheim, home to the impressive prince-bishop’s summer residence and its French Rococo garden. Created by the prince-bishops of Würzburg, the Hofgarten is still regarded today as one of the finest of its kind in Germany. Take the time to explore the interior and marvel at the beautiful design by the famous architect Balthasar Neumann. You then cycle along the well-paved cycle path to the historic town of Karlstadt and the ‘three-rivers town’ of Gemünden. The ruins of Scherenburg Castle tower impressively above the town, offering visitors a fantastic view of the Main Valley, the Spessart and the Rhön. The wooded hills in the river valley then draw close together, through which the Main and all the cyclists wind their way. Look forward to the old half-timbered town of Lohr, the gateway to the Spessart Nature Park. Stroll through the picturesque alleys, discover the fishermen’s quarter, the Bayersturm - Lohr’s landmark - the old town hall and the listed castle complex housing the Spessart Museum.

Today, you’ll cycle along a beautiful cycle path past the little town of Rothenfels, whose castle has towered high above the Main Valley for some 850 years. In high spirits, you’ll reach the small town of Marktheidenfeld via the cycle path, which runs mostly right alongside the riverbank. Marvel at the charming old town with its historic half-timbered houses and romantic narrow streets. Take a leisurely break at the market square with its Fisherman’s Fountain before cycling close to the riverbank once more. Passing Homburg Castle, you’ll ride swiftly towards your destination for the day, Wertheim. Let yourself be enchanted by the many colourful half-timbered houses and the winding old town before winding down the evening in comfort.

For the first 30 km of your cycle ride, you’ll be treated to unspoilt countryside, but by the time you reach Bürgstadt at the latest, you should stop for a break and visit the little St Martin’s Chapel. With its rich interior paintings, it is a real gem. The church was probably built in the first half of the 10th century. You can also look forward to a break in Miltenberg, which proudly showcases its old half-timbered buildings! The magnificent market square is known far beyond Miltenberg’s borders as the ‘Schnatterloch’. Here you can stop for a bite to eat in one of the charming cafés or at the Gasthaus zum Riesen, Germany’s oldest princely inn.  You then cycle swiftly along flat paths through the forests of the Spessart and the Odenwald to Aschaffenburg. The romantic old town on the Stiftsberg stretches out around the town hall. Visit Johannisburg Castle, with its shimmering red sandstone visible from afar, the collegiate church, the Jesuit church and Theatre Square with its sundial and Löwenapotheke.

Spend your lunch break in the romantic small town Seligenstadt, whose winding alleys and friendly half-timbered houses almost urge you to stay. Hanau is not less worthwhile: Steinheim castle, the German House of Goldsmiths and the castle of Philippsruhe are absolute highlights. Just like Offenbach, which is 1000 years old, where you will stay your night. Do not miss out on the Renaissance façade of Isenburg castle. Main attraction today is Frankfurt on the Main, with its old town, the Römer and variety of museums. There is plenty to see.

Today you are spoilt for choice. You can either spend plenty of time in Frankfurt am Main or in Mainz. Frankfurt beckons with St Nicholas’ Church, the Römerberg and the Römer, the Stone House, St Paul’s Church, the Hauptwache, the Alte Oper and the Jewish Cemetery. But Mainz also has plenty to offer. Let yourself be captivated by the eventful history of this 2,000-year-old city. Mainz beckons with Gutenbergplatz, the market square and market fountain, St. Martin’s Cathedral, the fascinating Gutenberg Museum, Fischergasse and the lively banks of the Rhine.

Our lovely time on the Main passed far too quickly. After breakfast, your cycling tour ends at the hotel in Mainz.
