From Saalfeld via Naumburg to Magdeburg on the River Elbe
The Saale rises in the Fichtelgebirge mountains at an altitude of 707 metres and flows into the Elbe near the town of Barby after a journey of approximately 430 kilometres. The Saale Cycle Route runs along the banks of the Saale through the three states of Bavaria, Thuringia and Saxony-Anhalt. Look forward to the special attractions of the Saale Cycle Route: impressive castles on both sides of the Saale, Jena with its Zeiss Planetarium and Schiller's garden house. The cycle route takes you through the Saale-Unstrut wine-growing region, past the proud castles of Saaleck and Rudelsburg to Naumburg with its famous cathedral. After marvelling at the cathedral and castle ensemble in Merseburg, the Saale Cycle Route takes you through the Lower Saale Valley Nature Park on its final stretch until the Saale finally flows into the Elbe. Overall, the Saale Cycle Route is well signposted with a uniform logo, and in some regions it is now even very good. In addition, the quality of the cycle route has been continuously improved over the years. Many gravel paths have been replaced by asphalt paths. Nevertheless, there are still a few small sections that are difficult to ride on, but the many sights to the right and left of the cycle route quickly make up for this.
