Lake Constance laid-back
Lake Constance is a real holiday paradise and will tempt you to take an especially pleasurable bike trip. Follow the beautiful bike trail on short one-day stages around the lake and enjoy the time on the saddle as well as a number of relaxing breaks. You will discover the gorgeousness of the flowers on the island of Mainau, Unteruhldingen, a 2200 year-old village dating from the Stone Age, the worthwhile town centre of Meersburg and Lindau Island, Germanys only town situated on an island (under monument protection since 1976). Make your trop even more unforgettable with a gondola trip up the Pfänder mountain and with an impressive walk through the picturesque foreland of Appenzell. This trip leaves enough time for everything you might want to visit or do!
1. day Arrival in Constance/Kreuzlingen
We recommend arriving early, you will not be disappointed! Take the occasion to walk around the Old Town of Constance. This is the place where the Council, fundamentally reorganized by the Catholic Church, met between 1414 and 1418 in the cathedrale and in the council building. Its most well-known victim was the Czech reformer Jan Hus, executed here in 1415. The aquariums of the Sea Life Center and the archaeological museum are also worth visiting.
2. day Constance - Gailingen/Stein am Rhein 40/30 km + boat trip
The first highlight of todays stage is the isand of Reichenau, world cultural heritage since 2001. You should absolutely visit St Georg church with its Ottonian wall frescos. You will then reach the peninsula of Höri, where the artists Hermann Hesse and Otto Dix lived for a while. Along the High-Rhine you will arrive in Gailingen.
3. day Trip to Rhine falls 30/50 km
Through a beautiful fluvial landscape you will reach Schaffhausen. Its intact, medieval townscape is characterized by the Munot fortress, realized in the 16th century according to the basic principles of Albrecht Dürers idea of fortress construction. You can be looking forward to the spectacle awaiting you next. You will visit the Rheinfall, Europes mightiest waterfall! A boat brings you close up to the rocks of the Rheinfall where you will have the chance to marvel at the thunderous masses of water from as close as possible.
4. day Gailingen/Stein am Rhein- Constance 40/30 km
Following the Rhine river you will arrive in Stein upon Rhine today. What a lovely town! Due to its houses decorated with numerous frescos and bays, its town gates and the narrow lanes of medieval flair it has been surnamed "Rothenburg of the High-Rhine". But also the rest of the route has a lot to offer. You will pass a great number of picturesque Swiss fishing villages. The perfect chance to enjoy the rural and peaceful landscape by the Untersee! Napoleons stepdaughter, Hortense de Beauharnais, found her new home in Salenstein. Visit the Napoleon museum before reaching Constance.
5. day Constance - Mainau Island - Radolfzell 30 km
Today stands in the name of the flower as you will discover Mainau, the flower island. Make sure to take enough time to visit this paradise-like island situated in the lake of Überlingen and let the exuberant and colourful ocean of flowers delight you, accompanied by the mammoth trees, small forests spending shadow and fragrant rose bushes. Afterwards, a small bike trip brings you to the former free city and todays Kneipp-Spa Radolfzell via Allensbach, known for its demoscopic institute.
6. day Radolfzell - Uhldingen/Meersburg 40 km
The route today will allow you to discover the western end of the lake from a closer perspective. Nearby Stahringen, you will first cross the Bodanrück and reach the ancient imperial palace Bodman, protected by steep precipices and the lake of Überlingen. You have now reached the western edge. The northern shore of Lake Constance with its numerous historical traces is a special highlight: Monasteries, imperial cities, baroque churches and ancient castles. Visit the reconstructed pile dwelling village of Uhldingen, here you can become a witness of how people lived in primitive times. Pile dwelling villages can be dated back to 4000 before Christ in this region.
7. day Uhldingen/ Meersburg - Friedrichshafen 25 km
Meersburg has a lot of attractions to offer. Visit the Old Castle, the oldest inhabited castle in Germany and at the same time the last domicile of Annette von Droste-Hülshoff. Also take time to marvel at the New castle with its grand staircase constructed by Balthasar Neumann and the market place seamed by picturesque half-timbered houses. Accompanied by the most beautiful alpine panorama, you will now bike into the lively town of Friedrichshafen. Here, you should absolutely visit the famous zeppelin museum before the day comes to an end.
8. day Friedrichshafen - Lindau/Bregenz 40 km
Your first station on the Lake Constance bike trail is Langenargen. You will for sure be amazed by the suspension bridge, who served as a model for the famous Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. Then, you will ride through wide orchards and reach the Bavarian town-island Lindau, whose Old Town is completely situated on an island. Here, a tour around town is an absolute must-see! The beautiful seaside promenade with its lighthouse and the lion at the harbour entrance will surely impress you. With a perfect view over the local Alps, you will bike around the bay of Bregenz and reach the festival town Bregenz with its unique sea-stage.
9. day Bregenz - St. Gallen 55 km + train ride
Todays stage takes you up on high grounds! Get on the cable railway with your bike, it will take you on top of the Pfänder, a mountain of 1064m of height often associated with Bregenz. What an experience! Enjoy the overwhelming view over the Alps and Lake Constance. Afterwards you cycle along the Alpenrhein towards Altstätten and by train further into the Appenzeller Land to Geis. And further on through the magnificent landscape to St. Gallen.
10. day Walking tour through Appenzell land or a day for your free disposal
Today it is your choice: either you explore the beautiful St. Gallen on foot or maybe you prefer a walking tour through the region?
11. day St. Gallen - Constance/Kreuzlingen 45 km
The last day on the Lake Constance bike trail is dedicated to the canton of Thurgau; due to its cultivation with apples and its isolated location, it is affectionately called "Must-India". You can be looking forward o visiting the towns of Arbon and Romanshorn with their castles and half-timbered houses. You should definitely not miss trying a "Schümli" (a Swiss coffee prepared on the basis of espresso) on one of the numerous patios. In combination with the amazing view, the coffee tastes even better here!
12. day Departure from Constance
Your roundtrip ends after breakfast in your hotel in Constance.

Arrival by train
Constance is easily accessible from all major cities in Germany by train. We recommend to take a taxi from the station to get to our partner hotels in Konstanz. Current schedule information and price information can be found at: www.bahn.de.
Parking facilities at the hotel
At the first hotel paid parking is possible, partialy. Furthermore, it is possible to park in a fenced parking lot for the duration of the bike tour (cost: EUR 39, - per trip / per car). Reservation required. It is also possible to use free parking spaces on public roads or public parking spaces / car parks. Parking garages (fish market, Dammgasse, old town, Benedictine square), costs apprx. 10-20 EUR per day / car.
Condition of cycle paths
You cycle mostly on flat, paved bike trails near the shore around the lake. Occasionally there are short sections of unpaved roads. The first sections takes place around the peninsula Höri through hilly terrain.
In the area of Friedrichshafen, the bike path goes along the main road. The lakeshore is largely open to the public
Available rental bikes
You can choose between woman’s and men's bicycles either with 8-speed gear shift and coaster brake or 27-speed gear shift and freewheel or electric bikes. All ladies' bikes have a low opening that makes mounting and dismounting much easier. The bikes are suitable for all ladies from 150 cm in height. Men's bikes are suitable for all gentlemen from 175 cm in height. You simply specify your wishes at time of booking.
Currencies in Switzerland
For Switzerland, we recommend to exchange Swiss franc. Although you can pay in Euros. Franken can easily be lifted by debit or credit card at an ATM.
Extra costs which are not inculded in the price
A possibly applicable city tax is not part of the price and has to be paid at the hotel locally.

Passport and visa requirements, health regulations
For EU citizens, there are no special passport or visa requirements and no health formalities to be considered for this trip.
The tour price already includes the statutory insolvency insurance. In addition, we recommend that you take out travel cancellation insurance upon receipt of your travel confirmation in order to protect yourself against financial disadvantages in the event of travel cancellation, interruption of travel, illness or accident.
With over 82,000 inhabitants, Constance is the largest city on Lake Constance and has maintained its long tradition as a city of trade and culture up to the present day. The cultural city is characterized by many historically significant buildings, such as the "Cathedral of Our Lady of Our Lady", which for twelve centuries was the cathedral of the Bishops of Constance and served as the meeting room of the Council of Constance (1414-1418). The Stadttheater, which is the oldest permanent stage in Germany, 400 years old, is another highlight.
Sea-Life Center Constance
In the SEA LIFE Constance, you will discover a variety of marine life: from curious and protective to rare and enigmatic animals. Many of these animals are on the red list of endangered animals. They have been saved and can not be returned to the natural habitat or have been born and raised as part of the SEA LIFE protection projects in the aquariums.
The Archaeological Landesmuseum Constance
The Archaeological Landesmuseum Baden-Württemberg is responsible for the archaeological archaeological discoveries of Baden-Württemberg, archiving the archaeological finds and presenting them in special exhibitions and several museums. The Austentelle in Konstanz is home to the most important permanent exhibition of the Archaeological State Museum of Baden-Württemberg.
The Rhinefall is the second largest waterfall in Europe, with a height of 23 meters and a width of 150 meters.
Island of Reichenau
The Reichenau is the largest island in Lake Constance. Since 2000, it has been listed on the UNESCO List of the World Heritage with the Reichenau Monastery. According to UNESCO, the island is an outstanding testimony to the religious and cultural role of a great Benedictine monastery in the Middle Ages.
With an area of about 45 hectares, the Mainau is the third largest island in Lake Constance. Because of its extremely rich subtropical, partly also tropical vegetation, the Mainau is also known as the flower island in Lake Constance.
The Affenberg Salem is an animal park and Germany's largest monkey reserve. The main attraction of the over 20 hectares of woodland are 200 berberoes who can move freely there and can be fed by the visitors with specially prepared popcorn
The Pfahlbaumuseum Unteruhldingen is an archaeological open-air museum, which is located on the shore of Lake Constance, with a museum building. It is the oldest open-air museum in Germany. The Freilichtmuseum contains several reconstruction sections and has been rebuilt several times since the opening of the museum in 1922. Since 1922 over 10 million visitors have visited the pile houses.
The Meersburg Castle, also the Old Castle or the Old Castle in Meersburg on the Lake Constance, is the oldest inhabited castle in Germany in the 7th century. A tour of the Burgmuseum gives an insight into more than 30 rooms. Including the old Burgküche, the Dürnitz, the Palas, the Brunnenstube, the Waffenhalle, Wehrgangs, Rittersaal, Burgverlies, two chapels, stable, Nordbastion and much more. Also the living rooms and the dying room of the poetess Annette von Droste-Hülshoff are included in this tour. In addition, you can climb the "Dagobertsturm" with a view of the city, the lake and the Alps. In the tower is a 19th century prison room as well as the Renaissancesaal with treasure chamber. In the deepest part of the tower, the torture chamber gives insight into the jurisdiction of the Middle Ages.
Zeppelin Museum Friedrichshafen
Opened in 1996, the Zeppelin Museum houses the world's largest collection on the history and technology of the Zeppelin airship.
The state capital of Lake Constance has many sights to see, so you can get inspired by historical buildings, traditional landmarks and modern architecture. A special highlight is the Festspielhaus and the world-famous Festspiele on the largest lake stage in the world.
With the Pfänder-Panoramagondel you hover quickly and comfortably to the mountain station at Pfänder (1064m). The unique panoramic view of Lake Constance and the 240 Alpine summits of Austria, Germany and Switzerland make the Pfänder the most famous vantage point in the region
In particular the play on the lake on the world's largest lake stage (as of 2005) in the Lake Constance is a draw for a large number of visitors. It is known for the beauty of the natural setting of Lake Constance, oversized stages, technical pieces of the cabinet and a unique acoustics achieved by the Bregenzer directional hearing technique.
