Tour
You should arrive as early as possible in order to have enough time in the cycling city of Oldenburg. Visit Oldenburg Castle and its park or one of the state museums, or simply drift through the city and enjoy the first day of your trip. In the afternoon, there will be a meeting with the local tour guide at the hotel. Here you will receive further tips for your round trip.
You start your cycle tour with a highlight: the park landscape of the Ammerland awaits you with its pretty rhododendron gardens before you reach the lovely spa town of Bad Zwischenahn. If you like eating fish, you should definitely try the widely recognised delicacy ‘Smoortaal’ - a freshly caught smoked eel prepared Ammerland-style. Cycle on via Remels, the highest point in East Frisia at 18 metres, to Wiesmoor, the flower of East Frisia.
Today you cycle through secluded, idyllic Fehn settlements, always accompanied by the canals that criss-cross the landscape. You reach the East Frisian capital of Aurich at a relaxed pace. Stroll through the historic old town, which is well worth seeing, and take a relaxing break before setting off towards the windmills and along the Ems-Jade Canal to the seaport of Emden. Take a stroll through the town or visit one of the three museum ships before relaxing at the end of the evening.
Can you already hear the call of the coast? It awaits you today on your cycle tour across the ‘Krummhörn’ to the picturesque fishing village of Greetsiel with the largest shrimp cutter harbour in the Weser-Ems region. Don't miss the opportunity to sample a portion of fresh prawns here. Continue past the Leybucht bay, where you may be lucky enough to spot seals, to Norden, the oldest town in East Frisia.
Today you are spoilt for choice: you can take a boat trip to the holiday island of Norderney and discover it by bike (crossing approx. 1 hour, ticket incl. bike not included in the price). Alternatively, you can take a cycle tour along the coast and the Wadden Sea National Park. Here you can visit the seal station in Norddreich. Whatever you choose, a varied day awaits you!
The next highlight awaits you today: the baroque moated castle in Dorum, which is considered the most beautiful moated castle in East Frisia. Today it houses a secondary school. The route continues to the former East Frisian chieftain town of Esens and through the vast marshland landscape, always accompanied by water and meadows, pretty farmhouses and black and coloured cows, before you reach Wittmund. Marvel at the unique brick buildings and gallery Dutch mills and the East Frisian way of life. You will spend the night in Wittmund or Jever.
Today you cycle from Wittmund to medieval Jever, where the Frisian beer is brewed, and on to Gödens Castle. Take a break there before continuing on to Dangast, the oldest North Sea resort on the coast of Lower Saxony. Nestled between forest and nature, Dangast is not just a highlight for art lovers.
The Jade Bay with its marvellous photo opportunities awaits you today before you reach Varel. Varel offers the curiosity museum, water tower and culinary specialities before you cycle along winding paths to the Jaderberg animal and leisure park, which is one of the largest animal parks in northern Germany with over 600 animals. You cycle past Rastede, the former summer residence of the Oldenburg counts and dukes, back to Oldenburg. You can then either depart directly or, if you wish, we can also book an extension for you in Oldenburg.
