Tour
Arrive early in the Bavarian capital – it's worth it! There are numerous sights to see, such as the English Garden, Marienplatz, which has been the centre of Munich since the city was founded in 1158 by Henry the Lion, the town hall and the Hofbräuhaus. In the afternoon, you will receive personal tour information and your bikes at the hotel.
Look forward to a wonderful day of cycling in the Bavarian Alpine foothills! Starting in Munich, you will first cycle through the shady Forstenrieder Park to Starnberg. Your route will take you along the deep blue Starnberg Lake, directly along the shore to Ambach or Bernried, where you will spend the night. Enjoy the crystal-clear waters of Starnberg Lake and the magnificent view of the surrounding mountains.
From Lake Starnberg, today's route takes you to Lake Riegsee and through the largest moorland area in Central Europe, the Murnauer Moos nature reserve, to picturesque Murnau. You cycle through idyllic, unspoilt nature along the Loisach river to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Spend some time in this beautiful Bavarian town or take a trip to the Zugspitze, Germany's highest mountain at 2,962 metres. From there, you can enjoy fantastic views of the Alps.
Today, you will reach the Isar River on well-developed cycle paths. Your route takes you through the sunny high valley with impressive views of the Karwendel and Wetterstein mountains to Mittenwald. It is worth taking a break here to discover this charming village with its artistic murals. The route then continues spectacularly through the Leutasch Valley to Austria. You cycle along the Leutasch stream through the charming landscape to your overnight accommodation.
Today, you will immerse yourself in the charming landscape of the Inn Valley. From Leutasch, you will first follow a gently undulating country road before enjoying an eight-kilometre descent to Telfs – a section that offers sweeping views of the valley. You will then follow the Inn on the former towpath, where barges were once pulled upstream by horses. Soon you will reach Stams, whose Baroque Cistercian monastery with its ornate façades and magnificent towers is an impressive testament to Tyrolean architecture. Via Haiming, your route finally takes you to Imst. Surrounded by orchards and mountain scenery, this lively town welcomes you. Known as the ‘Merano of North Tyrol’ due to its mild climate and cheerful atmosphere, it is a delightful place to visit.
Today's stage begins with a drive past Zams Monastery to Landeck. There you board the bus, which takes you comfortably up to Nauders. Only a few metres of altitude separate you from the Reschen Pass, which takes you over the Alps at an altitude of around 1,500 metres. Once at the top, a magnificent panorama opens up before you embark on the long descent to Lake Reschen. The lake itself impresses with its special atmosphere – best known is the church tower of Graun rising out of the water, a striking landmark of South Tyrol. From here, you follow the well-developed cycle path through the Vinschgau Valley, past apple orchards and wide meadows. Your destination for the day is St. Valentin or Mals with its characteristic, multi-towered town centre, or alternatively Burgeis, idyllically situated at the foot of Marienberg Abbey.
At the beginning of this stage, it is worth stopping in Glurns, whose completely preserved medieval city walls still bear witness to its eventful past. From here, you cycle past the Montaniruinen ruins and through lively Schlanders before the route gently descends towards Meran. Along the way, you will pass numerous castles and palaces, some directly on the cycle path, others towering high above the valley. Particularly impressive is Juval Castle, once the residence and now the museum of the famous mountaineer Reinhold Messner. During your ride, you will enjoy fantastic views of the mighty Ortler massif and the Stelvio Pass, which make the backdrop of this stage so unique.
Since 2004, the Vinschgau Railway has complemented the cycle path between Mals and Merano. It offers a convenient way to cover part of the route by train at any time and enjoy the landscape from a different perspective.
After breakfast, your cycling tour from Munich to Merano unfortunately comes to an end. We would be happy to book additional nights in Merano for you, so you can continue exploring the beauty of South Tyrol.
