Strasbourg - Luxembourg

Look forward to discovering Strasbourg, the capital of Alsace, with its many picturesque canals. Enjoy an informative boat tour, stroll to Strasbourg Cathedral, the city’s famous landmark, and explore the charming historic tanners’ quarter with its traditional half-timbered houses. In the evening, admire the impressive Maison Kammerzell, dating back to 1427 and now home to a restaurant.

Following the Rhine–Marne Canal, you first cycle to the impressive European Parliament. Your route then takes you through the gently rolling countryside of Alsace and continues along the canal from village to village. In the charming half-timbered villages, you will also encounter some of the region’s typical crops, including hops, tobacco and wheat, which is used, among other things, to make the famous French baguette. Today’s destination, Saverne, awaits with a picturesque old town, a small marina and the magnificent Château des Rohan, inspired by the famous Palace of Versailles.

Today, one of the most extraordinary structures along the Rhine–Marne Canal awaits: the Saint-Louis-Arzviller boat lift. You first cycle through the Vallée des Éclusiers, the Valley of the Lock Keepers, whose peaceful landscape is still shaped by the canal’s historic engineering structures and waterways heritage. Along the way, it is worth taking a look at Lutzelbourg Castle, perched high above the valley, before reaching the impressive boat lift – a unique feat of engineering in Europe that enables boats to overcome a significant difference in elevation. In Sarrebourg, you have the opportunity to admire Marc Chagall’s famous Peace Window. Afterwards, continue by train to Lunéville. If you prefer to cycle the entire route, today’s stage covers around 90 km. At the end of the day, Lunéville welcomes you with the magnificent Château des Lumières and its beautiful gardens.

From Lunéville, your cycling route first takes you through wide-open farmland before reaching the Rhine–Marne Canal. Along the way, Varangéville is well worth a stop, where the salt mine offers fascinating insights into the history of salt mining in Lorraine. As you continue, shady towpaths, locks, small marinas and natural wetlands accompany you on your journey. On arrival in Nancy, an impressive cityscape awaits: the magnificent Place Stanislas, part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, elegant Art Nouveau façades and the spacious Parc de la Pépinière invite you to explore and linger.

From Nancy, your route initially follows the Meurthe before joining the Moselle and continuing along the Voie Bleue, which was named Cycle Route of the Year in 2026. In Pont-à-Mousson, it is well worth stopping to visit the Premonstratensian Abbey, Place Duroc or the Au Fil du Papier Museum. You then continue to Arnaville, where a former lock keeper’s house offers a pleasant place to take a break. Following the Moselle, you enjoy a peaceful, scenic stretch of cycling before reaching the ponds of Outre-Moselle. Your destination for the day is Metz, a city rich in cultural highlights. Discover the impressive Saint-Étienne Cathedral, elegant squares and winding historic streets that reflect the city’s eventful past and diverse cultural influences. For a shorter day’s ride, you can take the train from Nancy to Pont-à-Mousson and begin cycling from there, reducing the stage to around 33 km.

From Metz towards Luxembourg, your route initially follows the Moselle Canal, which was once used to transport iron ore. Numerous ponds dot the landscape and add plenty of variety to today’s ride. Before long, you reach Jouy-aux-Arches, where a well-preserved Roman aqueduct recalls the region’s Gallo-Roman past. A fascinating contrast awaits at the U4 Blast Furnace Park in Uckange. This former industrial site offers an impressive insight into the steel production that once played such an important role in the Moselle Valley. Thionville is an ideal place for a longer break. Highlights include the Tour aux Puces, the historic fortifications, the château and the distinctive lock bridges. You then continue north along the Moselle to Sierck-les-Bains, dominated by the impressive Castle of the Dukes of Lorraine. Towards the end of the stage, you cross national borders several times: travelling via Germany, you finally enter Luxembourg and reach Schengen. This small town on the Moselle is known around the world as a symbol of open borders and freedom of movement within Europe. If you would like to shorten today’s ride, you can take the train from Metz to Thionville and cycle the remaining approximately 30 km from there.

To conclude your journey, you cycle along EuroVelo 5 and the SaarLorLux cycle route to Luxembourg City. Just beyond Schengen, the Biodiversum is well worth a visit. This modern visitor centre offers fascinating insights into the wetlands and rich birdlife around the Remerschen ponds. In Remich, enjoy beautiful views of the Moselle, the vineyards and the surrounding countryside. Leaving the river valley behind, you then cycle through Luxembourg’s forests and rural landscapes, following a mixture of well-developed cycle paths and shared roads. Another historical highlight awaits in Dalheim, where you can discover Gallo-Roman archaeological remains, including the ruins of an ancient theatre. Shortly before reaching your destination, it is also worth taking a look at Hesperange Castle. Finally, you arrive in Luxembourg City. The historic Grund district, impressive fortifications and winding streets of the old town provide a memorable finale to your cross-border cycling adventure.
