From the source of the Ruhr through the Ruhr region to the Rhine

Today, the Ruhr region has around five million inhabitants and is considered the largest conurbation in Germany. The first half of the Ruhr Cycle Route leads from its source near Winterberg through the beautiful natural landscape of the Sauerland.
Discover the many nature reserves, nature parks and high moors along the cycle route. The landscape appears untouched by the endless expanse of mountains and forests. After about 120 km, the Ruhr river reaches the Ruhr area with its magnificent reservoirs. Discover the beauty of the region. Thanks to extensive recultivation measures, the Ruhr area is now considered one of the richest cultural landscapes in Germany. The Ruhr Cycle Route takes you to numerous disused coal mines, coking plants, interesting industrial and technical museums and industrial heritage sites, many of which are now home to a lively cultural scene. The quality of the cycle paths is good to very good. The cycle routes run on easily navigable cycle paths and small roads, with traffic congestion only occurring on short sections. Those who prefer to forego the natural beauty of the Sauerland and instead want to experience more of the Ruhr region can follow the well-designed cycle paths on an interesting round trip from Herne and discover Duisburg on the Rhine, Essen, Bottrop and Bochum.
