tour description

Really romantic

The bike trail „Romantische Straße" from Würzburg to Donauwörth.

The bike trail Romantische Straße connects several wonderful old german cities. Your bike holiday starts at Würzburg with its residence, classified as UNESCO world cultural heritage in 1982. Follow the bike path to the famous town Rothenburg o.d. Tauber which you will enter through one of the 7 ancient gates. Find yourself behind massif defense walls, making you feel like in medieval times. On your bike tour castles and monasteries seam your way until you reach your wonderful destination Donauwörth. Enjoy the special atmosphere of the town and load along the grand „Reichsstraße“ with its noble middle-class houses.

1. day Würzburg arrival

Let’s go to Würzburg! The town has attained worldwide fame thanks to its residence and the fortress Marienberg.

2. day Würzburg - Wertheim 43 km

Follow the romantic course of the Aalbach through the Steinbachtal until reaching the Main again. Let the medieval fortified church of Dertingen inspire you, just as Wertheim, situated picturesquely between the landscapes of Spessart and Odenwald at the banks of the Tauber and the Main.Take a walk up to the beautiful castle ruin built of red sandstone or enjoy a cup of coffee in one of the cafes on the medieval town’s colorful market place.

3. day Wertheim - Bad Mergentheim 49 km

Be looking forward to the Taubertal valley! Genuine nature, broad evidence of a distinct history of art and Balthasar Neumann, the „Master of bridge construction in the Taubertal valley“ will impress you on your way. You will cycle through blooming meadows and vinyards spoilt by the sun in order to reach Bad Mergentheim. Loaf through one of Germany’s most beautiful spa garden and visit one of the nice cafes at the market place in renaissance style.

4. day Bad Mergentheim - Rothenburg ob der Tauber 53 km

A stage bursting of highlights! Already after a few kilometres you will reach Weikersheim and its worthwhile castle, then pass by Creglingen and its famous Lady altar by Tilman Riemenschneider. You will enter Rothenburg through one of the 7 ancient gates and find yourself behind massif defense walls, making you feel like in medieval times. Marvel at this glamorous town of half-timbered houses and look forward to a tour with the watchman at night (on one's own initiative).

5. day Rothenburg ob der Tauber - Dinkelsbühl 59 km

Meadows of a bright green accompany you to Schillingsfürst, whose baroque castle dominates the town. A visit is very worthwhile here, just as at the Bavarian “Jagdfalkenhofs”. Past Feuchtwangen you will continue to the former free imperial town Dinkelsbühl. Explore the colorful central place of the town, marvel at the most beautiful late gothic hall churches of Southern Germany. Frankish delicacies are waiting to be served at night in traditional restaurants before joining the watchman on his night tour.

6. day Dinkelsbühl - Nördlingen 44 km

The Nördlinger Ries is an area of great geological interest. A stone meteorite crashed to the ground with a speed of 72.000 km/h 15 million years ago.It has left a crater of a diameter of 20 -25 km. Be looking forward to the town wall of Nördlingen accessible at all points. Climb the “Daniel”, the bell tower measuring 90 m of St. Georg’s hall church. Then, visit the crater museum and loaf around the tanner’s quarter almost completely in its original state. And as almost every night, you are welcome to follow the steps of a watchman again tonight.

7. day Nördlingen - Donauwörth/Rain 39 km/60km

Castles and monasteries seam your way through the Wörnitztal valley today. You will pass Harburg and its castle throning high above the valley before reaching your wonderful destination Donauwörth. Enjoy the special atmosphere of the town and load along the grand „Reichsstraße“ with its noble middle-class houses. Should you wish to see another highlight, we recommend a visit in the famous Käthe-Krusedoll museum. Overnight stay in Donauwörth or Rain upon Lech.

8. day Donauwörth/Rain departure

Your roundtrip ends after breakfast in your hotel.

Characteristics of the cycle paths

For the most part, the cycle route runs on small, quiet and paved country roads; some of it is on paved or paved bike paths. The Taubertal itself is flatter again. The route is well signposted.

tour highlights

UNESCO world cultural heritage residence Würzburg

The Würzburg residence is the main building of the southern German Baroque and also one of the most important castles in Europe. In 1981, UNESCO already included it in the list of objects belonging to the Welterbe as a third building in Germany. It was built in 1720 - 1744 according to Balthasar Neumann's plans.

Grafeneckart and the Town Hall of Würzburg

The Würzburg town hall is not a single complex, but a group of buildings originally of different purpose from different times ... In 1256, a municipal council is mentioned in Würzburg for the first time. The citizens are thus decisively involved in the administration of the city. In 1316, the mayor and council acquired the Grafeneckart - visible sign of bourgeois independence striving against the episcopal sovereign.

Castle Schillingsfürst

Located on the edge of the town of the same name, Schillingsfürst Castle rises above a 545-meter-high mountain spur above the Mittelfränkischen Naturpark Frankenhöhe. Here is also the Danube-Rhine watershed. Thus the water flows from the western rainforests of the castle across the Rhine-Main system towards the North Sea; The rain, which collects itself on the eastern roofs of the castle, is carried over the Danube into the Black Sea. The name "Schillingsfürst" derives from the prominent location ("First" = "Fürst") of the castle on the highest point of the Franconian height as well as from the name of the builder ("Schilling") of the first castle built here. The lords of Schillingsfuerst belonged to the Franconian Uradel. After the extinction of the Schillingsfürster line, around 1300, the Hohenlohe family, also belonging to the Uradel family, took over the castle and its village Frankenheim.

Old Town Hall, Dinkelsbühl

The building, which has been designated as the "Old Town Hall" since 1855, is one of the most important buildings in Dinkelsbühl, both in terms of its former function and its particular urban development. It probably originated in a Staufian ministerial seat, on the foundation of which a residential tower was built at the beginning of the 14th century. 1361 it is called for the first time as "stainhaus" of the patrician family Berlin. The entire complex includes a four-wing system, which is grouped around a courtyard.

From autumn 2008, the "Haus der Geschichte Dinkelsbühl von Krieg und Frieden" (House of History) will be located there. The old town hall with Löwenbrunnen and the nearby Wörnitztor form the imposing backdrop of the "Kinderzeche" every year to the city transfer.

The Summer Festival of the Landestheater Dinkelsbühl takes place in the garden of the Künßberghaus at Altrathausplatz.
