Highlights

Constance
With over 82,000 inhabitants, Constance is the largest city on Lake Constance and has maintained its long tradition as a city of trade and culture up to the present day. The cultural city is characterized by many historic buildings, such as the "Cathedral of Our Lady of Our Lady", which for twelve centuries was the cathedral of the Bishops of Constance and served as the meeting room of the Council of Constance (1414-1418).

Sea-Life Center Constance
In the Sea-Life Center Constance, you will discover a variety of marine life: from curious and protective to rare and enigmatic animals. Many of these animals are on the red list of endangered animals. They have been saved and can not be returned to the natural habitat or have been born and raised as part of the SEA LIFE protection projects in the aquariums.

Rhinefall Schaffhausen
The Rhinefall Schaffhausen is the second largest waterfall in Europe, with a height of 23 meters and a width of 150 meters.

Island of Reichenau
The Reichenau is the largest island in Lake Constance. Since 2000, it has been listed on the UNESCO List of the World Heritage with the Reichenau Monastery. According to UNESCO, the island is an outstanding testimony to the religious and cultural role of a great Benedictine monastery in the Middle Ages.

Mainau Island
With an area of about 45 hectares, the Mainau is the third largest island in Lake Constance. Because of its extremely rich subtropical, partly also tropical vegetation, the Mainau is also known as the flower island in Lake Constance.

Pfahlbaumuseum Unteruhldingen
The Pfahlbaumuseum Unteruhldingen is an archaeological open-air museum, which is located on the shore of Lake Constance, with a museum building. It is the oldest open-air museum in Germany. The Freilichtmuseum contains several reconstruction sections and has been rebuilt several times since the opening of the museum in 1922. Since 1922 over 10 million visitors have visited the pile houses.

Meersburg Castle
The Meersburg Castle, also the Old Castle or the Old Castle in Meersburg on the Lake Constance, is the oldest inhabited castle in Germany in the 7th century. A tour of the Burgmuseum gives an insight into more than 30 rooms. Also the living rooms and the dying room of the poetess Annette von Droste-Hülshoff are included in this tour. In the tower is a 19th century prison room as well as the Renaissancesaal with treasure chamber. In the deepest part of the tower, the torture chamber gives insight into the jurisdiction of the Middle Ages.

Bregenz
The state capital Bregenz of Lake Constance has many sights to see, so you can get inspired by historical buildings, traditional landmarks and modern architecture. A special highlight is the Festspielhaus and the world-famous Festspiele on the largest lake stage in the world.

Stage at the lake in Bregenz (Seebühne)
Especially the world's largest Lake stage on Lake Constance is a magnet for a large number of visitors. It is known for the beauty of the natural setting.

Tour

Be sure to plan your trip well in advance, as Konstanz has plenty to offer: Stroll through the old town, visit Mainau Island or the Sea Life Center, or simply relax by Lake Constance and enjoy the view.

Your first day of cycling awaits you and has plenty to offer: Following pleasant paths, you’ll soon reach the former imperial city and present-day spa town of Radolfzell, which was founded in 826 by Bishop Radolf of Verona as a spiritual center. You’ll then cycle across the Bodanrück and continue around the western tip of Lake Constance to the northern shore. Here, numerous historical sights await you: monasteries, historic towns, Baroque churches, and impressive castles line your route. In Überlingen, you’ll find St. Nicholas Cathedral, the historic town hall, and the lovingly landscaped city garden dating back to 1875. The stately patrician houses, the old towers, and the winding old town give Überlingen a very special charm.

Today you’ll cycle along the Obersee, the largest part of Lake Constance. After a few kilometers, you’ll reach the Birnau Pilgrimage Church, nestled amidst the vineyards, from where you’ll enjoy a magnificent view of Lake Constance. In Unteruhldingen, the Pile Dwelling Museum awaits you; in Meersburg, you’ll find Germany’s oldest inhabited castle; and in Friedrichshafen, you can learn all about the history of aviation. You’ll continue on to Lindau. There, you’ll discover the old town, situated on an island, and the harbor entrance featuring the Bavarian Lion and lighthouse - a true symbol of the city.

With a view of the Alps, you’ll cycle along the Bregenz Bay to the charming festival city of Bregenz, home to its unique floating stage. A special experience awaits you here. If you’d like, you can head up to lofty heights! A cable car will take you to the Pfänder, Bregenz’s local mountain, which rises to 1,064 meters. Enjoy a breathtaking view of the Alps and Lake Constance. Then continue along the Lake Constance Cycle Path, crossing the young Rhine, which flows into Lake Constance here at Höchst and on to Arbon or Rorschach.

In Category A, you’ll stay in Arbon; in Category B, in Höchst or Rorschach.

Today, you’ll cycle along the Swiss side of Lake Constance on the Lake Constance Cycle Route. You’ll pass through Romanshorn and small Swiss towns and villages. Be sure to stop along the way and try a “Schümli” (Swiss espresso-based coffee) at one of the many lakeside terraces. Your destination for today is Constance, where you can round off the day with a stroll along the lake or through the old town.

Today you’ll cycle through picturesque Swiss fishing villages along the southern shore of Lake Untersee to Stein am Rhein. What a wonderful town! Marvel at the many houses adorned with bay windows and frescoes, the old city gates, and the medieval-style alleys. Stein am Rhein rightly bears the proud nickname “Rothenburg of the Upper Rhine.”  After a thorough tour, you’ll cycle on to Schaffhausen. Its well-preserved medieval townscape is dominated by the 16th-century Munot Fortress. To round off the day, enjoy a relaxing evening at one of the town’s many fine restaurants and soak up the atmosphere of Fronwagplatz.

Look forward to today’s spectacular experience. You’ll visit the Rhine Falls, the most powerful waterfall in Central Europe! A boat will take you to the Rhine Falls rock, where you can experience the full force of the roaring waters up close. You’ll then cycle back to Stein am Rhein along the other side of the Rhine through a beautiful river landscape. Cycling leisurely across the Höri peninsula on Lake Constance, which has attracted numerous artists and writers in search of inspiration, you’ll head to Gaienhofen, where you’ll board the boat to Reichenau Island. Look forward to exploring Reichenau Monastery Island, which was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000. With many memories to take home, you’ll then cycle on to Constance.

After breakfast, it’s unfortunately time to say goodbye to Lake Constance once again, and you’ll begin your journey home.
