Like paradise

Lake Constance – no other holiday destination in Europe symbolises such a classical bicycling region as the landscape surrounding the lake between Germany, Austria and Switzerland. A compact network of good quality and signposted cycle paths, along the lakeshore and the attractive surrounding countryside, promise visitors an enjoyable and undisturbed cycling experience. First class hotels, cosy country guesthouses, first class cuisine and local dishes ensure physical well being, along with a stylish mix of vineyards, orchards, the glimmering surface of the lake and the fascinating panorama of the Alps. Swimming beaches, thermal baths, activity parks and wildlife parks provide plenty of relaxation and recuperation from saddles and pedals.

1. day Arrival in Constance/Kreuzlingen

Visit the island of Mainau or enjoy the Old town of Konstanz.Worth seeing are also the aquaria of the Sea Life Center and the Archeological State Museum.

2. day Konstanz - Stein am Rhein, ca. 50/40 km (cat. B) bzw. Konstanz - Stein am Rhein/Öhningen/Gaienhofen, ca. 30/40 km (cat. A)

It's finally starting! On the southern shore you cycle along the lake through picturesque Swiss fishing villages to Stein am Rhein with its picturesque old town. From there it is only a stone's throw to the town of Gailingen.

3. day Gailingen/Stein am Rhein – Ludwigshafen/Sipplingen/Überlingen, ca. 45 – 60 km (cat B) bzw. Stein am Rhein/Öhningen/Gaienhofen – Überlingen, ca. 50/40 km (cat A)

Today you circle the Höri peninsula, where Otto Dix and Hermann Hesse once lived. Take a break in the old imperial town of Radolfzell. Then you cross the Bodanrück and have to accept a short climb. But the arrival at the Überlinger See compensates the climb with great views over the Swabian Sea.

4. day Ludwigshafen/Sipplingen/Überlingen – Kressbronn/Nonnenhorn, ca. 50 – 60 km (cat B) bzw. Überlingen – Wasserburg/Lindau, ca. 60 km (cat A)

First you cycle to the worth-seeing baroque church Birnau. Soon you reach the lake dwellings near Unteruhldingen, before you arrive in Meersburg. You should not only visit the castle but also enjoy the flair of the lively town.

5. day Kressbronn/Nonnenhorn – Höchst/Rorschach, ca. 40/50 km (cat B) bzw. Wasserburg/Lindau – Arbon, ca. 50 km (cat A)

It is hard to say goodbye to Lindau with it´s beautiful old town but new impressions lie ahead. You cycle through Austria to the festival town Bregenz with its famous lake-stage. By cable railway you may go on the Pfänder and enjoy a phantastic view of the Lake Constance. Quickly you cycle through the nature protection area Rheindelta to Switzerland.

6. day Höchst/Rorschach – Konstanz, ca. 60 km (cat B) bzw. Arbon – Konstanz, ca. 35 km (cat A)

Through small villages and villages full of framework you cycle along the Swiss shore to Constance. In Constance you should visit Mainau Island! Return of rental bikes.

7. day Departure from Constance/Kreuzlingen

After breakfast your round trip at Lake Constance ends. You may book extra nights for all towns of your trip, because Lake Constance is really worth a bicycle journey!

Arrival by train

Constance is easily accessible from all major cities in Germany by train. We recommend to take a taxi from the train station to get to our hotels in Constance.

Parking facilities at the hotel

At the first hotel paid parking is possible, partialy.

Furthermore, it is possible to park in a fenced parking lot for the duration of the bike tour (cost: EUR 39, - per trip / per car). Reservation required.

It is also possible to use free parking spaces on public roads or public parking spaces / car parks.

Parking garages (fish market, Dammgasse, old town, Benedictine square), costs apprx. 10-20 EUR per day / car.

Condition of cycle paths

You cycle on flat, paved bike trails near the shore around the lake mostly. Occasionally there are short sections of unpaved roads. The first sections takes place around the peninsula Höri through hilly terrain. In the area of Friedrichshafen, the bike path goes along the main road. The lakeshore is largely open to the public.

Available rental bikes

You can choose between woman’s and men's bicycles either with 8-speed gear shift and coaster brake or 27-speed gear shift and freewheel or electric bikes. All ladies' bikes have a low opening that makes mounting and dismounting much easier. The bikes are suitable for all ladies from 150 cm in height. Men's bikes are suitable for all gentlemen from 175 cm in height. You simply specify your wishes at time of booking.

Currencies in Switzerland

For Switzerland, we recommend to exchange Swiss franc. Although you can pay in euros. Franken can easily be lifted by debit or credit card at an ATM.

Extra costs which are not inculded in the price

A possibly applicable city tax is not part of the price and has to be paid at the hotel locally.

Passport and visa requirements, health regulations

For EU citizens, there are no special passport or visa requirements and no health formalities to be considered for this trip.

Travel insurance

The tour price already includes the statutory insolvency insurance. In addition, we recommend that you take out travel cancellation insurance upon receipt of your travel confirmation in order to protect yourself against financial disadvantages in the event of travel cancellation, interruption of travel, illness or accident.

With over 82,000 inhabitants, Konstanz is the largest city on Lake Constance and has maintained its long tradition as a city of trade and culture up to the present day. The cultural city is characterized by many historic buildings, such as the "Cathedral of Our Lady of Our Lady", which for twelve centuries was the cathedral of the Bishops of Constance  and served as the meeting room of the Council of Costance (1414-1418). Island of Reichenau

The Reichenau is the largest island in Lake Constance. Since 2000, it has been listed on the UNESCO List of the World Heritage with the Reichenau Monastery. According to UNESCO, the island is an outstanding testimony to the religious and cultural role of a great Benedictine monastery in the Middle Ages.

With an area of about 45 hectares, the Mainau is the third largest island in Lake Constance. Because of its extremely rich subtropical, partly also tropical vegetation, the Mainau is also known as the flower island in Lake Constance.

Pfahlbaumuseum Unteruhldingen

The Pfahlbaumuseum Unteruhldingen is an archaeological open-air museum, which is located on the shore of Lake Constance, with a museum building. It is the oldest open-air museum in Germany. The Freilichtmuseum contains several reconstruction sections and has been rebuilt several times since the opening of the museum in 1922. Since 1922 over 10 million visitors have visited the pile houses.

Meersburg Castle

The Meersburg Castle, also the Old Castle or the Old Castle in Meersburg on the Lake Constance, is the oldest inhabited castle in Germany in the 7th century. A tour of the Burgmuseum gives an insight into more than 30 rooms. Including the old Burgküche, the Dürnitz, the Palas, the Brunnenstube, the Waffenhalle, Wehrgangs, Rittersaal, Burgverlies, two chapels, stable, Nordbastion and much more. Also the living rooms and the dying room of the poetess Annette von Droste-Hülshoff are included in this tour. In addition, you can climb the "Dagobertsturm" with a view of the city, the lake and the Alps. In the tower is a 19th century prison room as well as the Renaissancesaal with treasure chamber. In the deepest part of the tower, the torture chamber gives insight into the jurisdiction of the Middle Ages.

The state capital of Lake Constance has many sights to see, so you can get inspired by historical buildings, traditional landmarks and modern architecture. A special highlight is the Festspielhaus and the world-famous Festspiele on the largest lake stage in the world.
