The Emsland region covers an area of 2,880 km² stretching from the North Rhine-Westphalia border near Rheine to the East Frisia border near Papenburg, offering visitors a wide range of cultural and leisure activities. The Emsland is larger in area than the federal state of Saarland, making it the largest district in Lower Saxony and one of the largest in Germany. Its neighbours to the west are the Netherlands, with whom it has diverse relations across a 60 km long shared border. To the east, the districts of Cloppenburg and Osnabrück border the Emsland, and to the southwest, the district of Grafschaft Bentheim. The old fortified town of Meppen lies on three rivers in the heart of the Emsland region between Papenburg and Lingen on the western edge of Lower Saxony, just under 20 km from the Dutch border. The name Meppen means ‘at the mouths’ and refers to the varied water landscapes. The charming rural surroundings with 373 km of excellent cycle paths are perfect for cycling. Look forward to beautiful bike rides and the small Emsland town of Meppen. The historic town hall, dating from 1408, is built from mighty boulders in the basement and is considered the town's landmark.

This trip is perfect for:

  • One-time packers: With the radial bike tour, you only need to pack and unpack your suitcase once, as you will be staying in the same accommodation for the entire trip.
  • City lovers: Let yourself be enchanted by the towns along the route.
  • Culture seekers: This trip also caters to your cultural needs.

Highlights:

Meppen
The fortified town of Meppen is located only about 20 km from the Dutch border. The historic ramparts surrounding the old town invite visitors to take a stroll. The Meppen open-air theatre offers a unique theatre experience in summer. The Koppelschleuse lock can now be viewed in its original condition. This technical masterpiece was built to allow navigation of the Hase river. The town's landmark is the historic town hall, whose basement was built from mighty boulders in 1408.

Old post office in Lingen
The old post office in Lingen at the market is one of Lingen's most historic buildings.

Hüvener Mill
The Hüvener Mill was first mentioned in documents as early as 1534, as evidenced by the entry ‘Erffkotter tho Hüven de Moller’ in the register of the Meppen office. However, it is likely to be much older. After a fire in 1801, it was immediately rebuilt and returned to service in 1802.

Borken
With its 780-year history, Borken offers numerous attractions, not only in terms of art history, but also in terms of landscape, with its unspoilt moorland and heathland areas, the typical parkland of the Münsterland region, wildlife and bird enclosures, and a trout farm.

Haselünne
The 200-hectare Haselünne recreation area encompasses a large lake and a forest with a game reserve. The first Burgmannshöfe (castle farms) were mentioned in documents as early as 1346. The Westerholtsche Burgmannhof has been preserved in virtually unchanged form. The 36-hectare Wacholderhain nature reserve has been used as pasture since the Middle Ages to preserve the juniper trees. A picturesque museum village lies hidden behind the gates of the open-air and local history museum.

Clemenswerth hunting lodge
The star-shaped Clemenswerth hunting lodge is the only one of its kind still standing. Today, parts of the former furnishings and collections of courtly home décor and princely hunting equipment can still be viewed.
