tour description

Holiday paradise Bavarian Sea

The lake is like a blue beauty. Bavaria’s largest lake, also called the Bavarian sea, is embedded in a beautiful natural landscape. Already the Romans appreciated the beauty of the lake and the archbishops of Salzburg and the dukes of Bavaria loved the idyllic landscape too. On the daily trips you will cycle through the landscape of the beautiful alpine foothills and marvel at its variety. The crystal clear rivers and lakes are there to refresh you. On your way, you will be able to visit antique castles and monasteries and in the evenings you can enjoy your beautiful hotel located directly at the lake. On this bike journey through the most beautiful parts of Germany, you will enjoy every single kilometer. You will be enchanted by the beauty of the region!

1. day Prien at Lake Chiemsee arrival

Look forward to one of the best houses at Lake Chiemsee! The 4-star Garden-Hotel-Reinhart is located in Prien-Stock, just a few meters from Lake Chiemsee, the harbor and the promenade. Personal tour briefing and handover of the rental bikes in the afternoon.

2. day Eggstätter Seenplatte and Amerang 40-60 km

Take your bathingsuit with you and head towards to the Eggstätter Seenplatte, which was build through ice age. The oldest nature reserve in Bavaria, encompasses 17 lakes and is full of picturesque places. You will cycle on a relaxing tour through forests, fragrant meadows, and past pretty farms to Höslwang, with a magnificent panoramic view of the Upper Bavarian Alps. If you want, you can extend this tour by 20 kilometres and cycle to Amerang, where you will find the well-known German Car Museum and the Historical Farmhouse Museum. Via Eggstätt and Breitbrunn, you will get back to Prien or Pelham.

3. day Lake Chiemsee round trip ca. 65 km

Today, you will discover the beauty of Lake Chiemsee and the pretty places along the way. You will be enchanted by the unique nature and visit major attractions, such as the Roman Museum in Seebruck, or the Horse Museum in Arlaching. You will also have ample opportunities to swim and cool off in the refreshing waters of Lake Chiemsee.

4. day Trip to the Islands Herren- and Fraueninsel (without bike)

Take the boat from Prien to the island “Herreninsel” where you can visit the famous castle Herrenchiemsee built under King Ludwig II. On your way back, you will stop at the island Fraueninsel, where you will find a well-known abbey (the oldest still-existing German-speaking female convent on the northern side of the Alps). Explore the beautiful gardens, the island potteries, the fish smoke-houses, and the romantic outdoor restaurant areas at the lake. Guests of the hotel Seeblick cycle for the journey by boat to Prien and back (approx. 20 km).

5. day Trip to Achental valley ca. 55 km

First you will take the bus or the train (not included) from Prien to Übersee. Then you will cycle via the climatic health resort Grassau and along the Achental bike path via Unterwössen to Schleching. You will ride your bicycle past colourful meadows, surrounded by spectacular mountains. On routes along the tranquil river Tiroler Ache, you will cycle via Marquartstein back to Grassau. Quiet, shady paths will lead you through the Rottauer Filze (moorland) to Bernau and along Lake Chiemsee to Prien.

6. day Lakes and monasteries ca. 45 km + boat trip

The day starts with an atmospheric boat trip on lake Chiemsee from Prien to Seebruck. Back on land, you will cycle via Truchtlaching an der Alz to the monastery Seeon with its famous buildings and the romantic lake. After a short visit to the waterfall Hammersbach, you will cycle via Bernau and on flat paths back to Prien.

tour highlights

Lake Chiemsee

The largest lake in Bavaria is the Chiemsee, which is otherwise known as the "Bavarian Sea". The name has a kernel of truth in it: not only does the lake, which has an area of 80 square kilometres, have tides like the sea, it also originated from the primeval Thetis Sea which once covered almost half of Europe. It has three islands – Herreninsel, Fraueninsel and uninhabited Krautinsel – which all benefit from frequent ferry connections to the mainland. On Herreninsel King Ludwig built Schloss Herrenchiemsee, while Fraueninsel has an 8th century Benedictine convent.

Prien

The breathtaking lakeside vista of Chiemsee framed by towering Alpine mountains – that can only be Prien am Chiemsee. Prien am Chiemsee offers visitors a truly unique combination of lake life, mountains, nature and culture. The Chiemsee-Region is known as “the Bavarian seaside”, and there is a whole host of different ways to spend a happy holiday in this beautiful part of Germany. Prien’s townscape is particularly picturesque by virtue of its traditional Upper Bavarian style. Many of the town’s houses and shop fronts are decorated with exquisite frescoes. The harbor at Prien/Stock offers visitors regular connections to the islands Herrenchiemsee and Frauenchiemsee all year round.

Eggstätt-Hemhofer Lake

The landscape is a typical formation from the last ice age: lakes, marshes, kettle holes, alluvial forests, low and high moors, streams and ponds, all characterize this ancient landscape. The lake district covers 17 individual lakes. The natural biotope offers a refuge for many endangered plant and animal species. The lakeland is ideal for hiking, swimming and relaxing with cycling and hiking trails, tables and benches and approx. 40 information boards. Swimming is allowed at indicated areas at Lake Hartsee, Lake Langbürgnersee and Lake Pelhamer.

Palace of Herrenchiemsee

In 1873 King Ludwig II of Bavaria acquired the Herreninsel as the location for his Royal Palace of Herrenchiemsee (New Palace). Modelled on Versailles, this palace was built as a "Temple of Fame" for King Louis XIV of France, whom the Bavarian monarch fervently admired.

The actual building of this "Bavarian Versailles", which was begun in 1878 from plans by Georg Dollmann, was preceded by a total of 13 planning stages. When Ludwig II died in 1886 the palace was still incomplete, and sections of it were later demolished.

Island Frauenchiemsee

The Benedictine abbey Frauenwörth was founded by King Ludwig the German in 860. The first abbess was his daughter Irmingard, who was beatified in 1929 and is today patron saint of Chiemgau. The gatehouse which is located in front of the abbey, is the only surviving building from the Carolingian period. The frescoes in the Chapel of St. Michael were created between 860 and 865 and have a strong Byzantine influence. The chapel’s pictures depict archangels which watch over Christ. The gatehouse was made into a school building and then later used as an exhibition hall for Chiemsee painters. The free-standing bell tower of the minster or Campanile from the 13th or 14th Century is today one of the landmarks of Chiemgau. The Frauenwörth minster, a three-isled Romanesque basilica is worth more than just a passing mention. The church got its late Gothic looks between 1468 and 1476, while the frescoes from 1130 are among the earliest remaining examples of Romanesque mural painting in Europe. Between 1803 and 1838 the abbey was abandoned, but later the nuns ran a girls’ school on Fraueninsel. Today the abbey offers visitors peaceful retreats.

Kampenwand Cable Car

4-seater gondolas travel swiftly to the summit (1,500 m ASL) that affords fascinating views over the central Alps, Lake Chiemsee and its islands. Just 100 m away along a buggy-friendly path is the SonnenAlm chalet which has a large, child-friendly panorama terrace. 30 minutes is all it takes to walk the panorama trail that is mostly all on one level. There are also a number of well-maintained trails ranging from short walks to day-long hikes.
