Cock-and-bull-stories
The East Frisia Bike Tour.
Cycling in East-Friesland is a special pleasure! Where else can you combine fresh North-sea climate, flat natural landscapes, a lot of interesting culture and hospitality as well as ideal cycle paths to such a varied cycle tour? Follow us to hidden moor villages, green dykes and idyllic marshes. Explore the culture of Störtebeker’s region or the East-Frisian national beverage. Rest at “leaning” churches and historic chieftain fortresses and discover picturesque little villages of this unique region. Optional highlight is a day on Norderney island.
1. day Oldenburg arrival
Come early to the old cycling town of Oldenburg - it's worth it! Especially worth seeing is, of course, right after your arrival the castle of Oldenburg. In the afternoon, a meeting with the local tour guide will take place at the hotel. The guide will give you some interesting information about your trip.
2. day Oldenburg - Wiesmoor ca. 55 km
A real highlight already on the first day! You will bike through the parks of the Ammerland with its neat rhododendron gardens to the lovely spa Bad Zwischenahn. Here you should taste the famous delicacy “Smoortaal”, a fresh and cured eel served the Ammerland way. With this new energy you will pass Est-Frisia’s highest point close to Remels easily (18 metres!).
3. day Wiesmoor - Emden ca. 55 km
Canals give the landscape a special shape and accompany you through the idyllic “Fehnsiedlungen”, settlements in the East-Frisia moorlands to Aurich with its beautiful historical Old Town. Take a break in the secret capital of East-Frisia before the proud windmills indicate your way to the city of Emden with its great importance in art history. Emden used to be among the wealthiest seaports in Europe!
4. day Emden - Norden/Norddeich ca. 55 km
The seaside is calling for you! Through the “Krummhörn” you will bike to the quaint fishing village of Greetsiel, the biggest shrimp-cutter port in the Weser-Ems region. You should not miss out on tasting a portion of fresh shrimps here! Past the Leybay you will reach Norden, the oldest city of East-Frisia. With a little luck you might get to see bathing seals.
5. day Trip to the island of Norderney
Would you prefer a boat trip to the holiday island Norderney (1 hour) or a trip by bike along the coast with its mudflat national park and a visit of the seal station Norddeich? No matter which choice you make, an exciting day lies ahead of you!
6. day Norden/Norddeich - Wittmund/Jever 50-62 km
Another highlight is scheduled for today! Marvel at East-Frisia’s oldest baroque moated castle in Dornum hosting a secondary school today. Through the wide enchanting marsh landscape with its meadows and waters, pretty farmhouses with black-chequered cows you will reach the Old Town of Wittmund with its unique brick houses.
7. day Wittmund/Jever - Dangast 38-50 km
Be looking forward to the medieval small town at the Jever where the tart Frisian beer is brewed, to Gödens castle and the oldest North Sea spa Dangast embedded between woods and the sea.
8. day Dangast - Oldenburg 50 km / departure
Exquisite photography motives will be found along the Jadebusen on your way to Varel where the museum of articles of virtue, the water tower and culinary highlights await you. On intricate paths you will bike to the animal and leisure park Jadeberg. Counting more than 600 animals it is one of the biggest animal parks in northern Germany. Later you will arrive at the ancient summer residence of the Oldenburg counts and dukes in Rastede. Departue in the afternoon or prolongation.
