Highlights

Passau
Three rivers from three directions - the Danube from the west, the Inn from the south and the Ilz from the north - make the landscape at the Dreiflüsseeck in Passau a unique beauty. In addition, there is the baroque old town, which was created by Italian masters in the 17th century and in the center of which there is the majestic St. Stephen's Cathedral with the largest cathedral organ in the world. Here charm and beauty, history and culture, art and experience go hand in hand.

St. Nikola
In the middle of the legendary Strudengau lies the old Schiffermarkt St. Nikola. Picturesquely embedded between forest-covered mountains and the river, this area is one of the most scenic parts of the Danube valley. Well-run restaurants and private pensions offer a delicious cuisine. Quiet forests and hiking trails invite to go on a hiking tour with a wonderful view over the Danube valley, castles and ruins.

Castle Aggstein
The Aggstein castle ruins are the remains of a castle on the right bank of the Danube in the Wachau, whose origins go back to the 12th century. The castle ruins are about 300 meters above the right bank of the Danube on a rock spur that runs in an east-west direction.

Krems
At the exit of the Wachau, one of the most beautiful sections of the Danube Valley, lies the lovely twin town of Krems-Stein. Krems an der Donau is worth a visit at any time of the year! Immerse yourself in the land on the Nibelungen.

Albertina, Vienna
The Albertina not only owns one of the largest and most valuable graphic collections in the world with works such as Dürer's “Feldhase” and Klimt's studies of women. Her new permanent collection presents modern masterpieces and thus spans the range from Monet to Picasso to Baselitz. As the largest Habsburg residential palace, the Albertina is enthroned at the southern tip of the Hofburg on one of the last bastion walls in Vienna.

Tour

Arrive early to Passau and look forward to a walk through the pretty "New Center" of the three-river city. Passau's center has been completely redesigned and now offers a wonderful car-free pedestrian zone. We definitely recommend a short tour of the cathedral with a concert on the largest church organ in the world (except on Sundays and public holidays).

Today, your journey into the beautiful countryside along the Danube begins. You leave Passau at a leisurely pace and follow the river through idyllic meadows, past Obernzell and the impressive Engelhartszell Abbey. At lunchtime, a traditional beer garden invites you to take a pleasant break—regional specialties and a cool drink taste especially good under the shade of chestnut trees.
You will spend the night in Niederranna or the surrounding area.

Today, a real natural highlight is on the agenda: the Schlögener Schlinge, an almost mystical-looking river loop surrounded by dense greenery. A short, rewarding climb takes you to the famous Schlögener Donaublick, which offers a magnificent panorama of the mighty river landscape. Then you continue cycling at a leisurely pace, past small towns such as Obermühl, until you reach idyllic Aschach. The banks of the Danube are a wonderful place to take a break—perhaps with an ice cream in your hand and a view of the ships passing by at a leisurely pace.

In the morning, cycle leisurely along the Danube to Ottensheim. You will travel to Linz, the European Capital of Culture in 2009, by train. Enjoy a leisurely break in this bright green city and be sure to try the famous Linzer Torte. A visit to Kasperl & Seppy at the imaginative Linz Puppet Theater is a great experience, especially for the little ones. Then cycle along the Danube Cycle Path through the Machland region to Mitterkirchen. Here, you can explore what life was like several thousand years ago at the “Keltendorf” open-air museum.

You cycle through a fertile, gently rolling landscape, past fragrant orchards and lovingly tended farms. In Grein, we recommend a short stop at the historic town theater—the oldest theater in Austria and a real gem. The pearl of the Strudengau region also invites you to linger with its long-established inns, pastry shops, and Biedermeier coffee house. Visit the imposing Greinburg Castle, which is particularly impressive with its knights' hall. In the late afternoon, you will finally roll into Sarling, where you will be greeted with a warm “Grüß Gott” – and perhaps even welcomed with a glass of refreshing cider.

Look forward to today's cycling tour, as you will be cycling through Austria's most famous wine-growing region – the Wachau. Visit Melk, the “gateway to the Wachau,” and stroll through the city park with its modern playground. Don't miss out on a little wine tasting at one of the numerous wineries along the Danube Cycle Path to Aggstein. Discover artistically landscaped vineyards, wide plains, and valuable art treasures on the banks of what is probably Europe's most beautiful river valley. Pay a visit to the Aggstein castle ruins! A fabulous experience and a fantastic view of the Danube Valley await you.

Take the ferry across to the left bank of the Danube and immediately immerse yourself in the picture-perfect landscape of the Wachau region. Your route takes you through Spitz, Dürnstein, and Weißenkirchen, past sun-drenched vineyards, enchanting alleyways, and picturesque wine farms, where the scent of ripe grapes and warm stone walls hangs in the air. Enjoy this incomparable interplay of river, rock, and vines one last time before boarding the train in Traismauer, which will take you to Vienna in a relaxed and excited mood.

After breakfast, your eventful family bike tour along the Danube comes to an end.
Would you like to stay longer? No problem, we would be happy to book additional nights for you in Vienna or Passau.
