tour

Individual arrival to Hinterzarten. You can be looking forward to a relaxed walk on the lakeside or a pedal boat tour on the clear glacial lake.

The day begins on the Bähnle-bike trail,a former railway track, leading through the beautiful Black Forest. An excursion to the wild and romantic Wutach-canyon (8 additional kilometres) is possible along the way. Afterwards, you will cross the railway line of the  Sauschwänzlebahn (“pig’s tail railway”), to find your way to Stühlingen. Marvel at Hohenlupfen castle, the town’s landmark, and visit the monastery’s church. Anyone who wishes to shorten this stage has the option to cycle directly to Stühlingen (about 50km).

Today, you are invited to discover the charm of the southern Black Forest: A trout rearing farm, wide stone fruit plantations and a small schnaps distillery.with souvenir shop. A worthwhile place for a break are the monastery of Marienburg or Wutöschingen by the megalithic tomb. In the afternoon, the bike trail leads to the town Bad Säckingen via Laufenburg. A night guard’s tour in the evening is a must-do in this historical town.

You will comfortably cycle past Beuggen and its moated castle (seat of the Teutonic Order for 560 years) to arrive in Kaiseraugst. Take some time for an extended stop here. By the riverbank on the northern edge of the town, an archaeologist came to expose a public Roman bath in 1974/75. In 1962, the silver treasure of of Kaiseraugst was discovered by the fort in the course of construction works. It consists of ornated tiles, drinking vessels, silverware and 186 silver coins and medallions. From here, Basel is not far. Its rich cultural history and the world-famous museums create a unique attraction.

What an experience! Today you will pass the longest bike and pedestrian’s bridge of the world. thermal bath of Bad Bellingen invites for a relaxing refreshment before you will leave the Rhine continuing your way to Neuenburg. Magnificent bike trails take you through vineyards, meadows and valleys. A stunningly colourful landscape full of nature on your way to the Markgräflerland. Plenty of places to stop at in order to witness the long winegrowing tradition along your way. Spend the night in Staufen, Pfaffenweiler or Heitersheim.

Enjoy the morning with a wonderful view over the Rhine valley. Afterwads, you will cycle past the numerous small half-timbered houses, vintner’s cooperatives and  distilleries of the Schneckental to Freiburg. Discover this beautiful town during a walk. Everything ist served here: History, art, architecture, wine or gastronomy, Freiburg has it all. With these new impressions you will continue to Hinterzarten. We recommend taking the train from Kirchzarten (not inclusive in the tour), as the last part of the way (round about 25 km) is, due to extreme ascents, a challenge even for much trained cyclists.

Today your lovely tour through the black forrest ends. We gladly book an additional night for you as there is a lot left to see and to experience.

Train schedule information

Condition of cycle paths

You cycle on the signposted Southern Black Forest cycle path on mostly quiet country roads and traffic-free cycle paths. The route is only partially on roads with moderate traffic and unpaved roads. The route tends to run downhill; with one or the other ascent in the Black Forest to be mastered. A basic level of fitness is therefore recommended. We recommend the most difficult point from Kirchzarten to Hinterzarten due to the many meters of altitude to be covered by train.

Available rental bikes

If you would like a rental bike for the tour, we will bring it to your starting hotel and pick it up at your destination. You can choose from 24-speed unisex bicycles with free-wheeling and 8-speed unisex electric bicycles with hub gears and free-wheeling. The rental bikes are equipped with a waterproof, spacious saddlebag as well as a tool set, an air pump, an odometer and a lock. You will also receive a handlebar bag per room. On request, we will be happy to provide a second saddle bag for you. Simply state your bike requirements when booking.

Train Kirchzarten - Hinterzarten

The trains run every 30 minutes, the journey time is approximately 25 minutes (fare per person, bike included approximately EUR 15).

Route from Kirchzarten to Hinterzarten on the 6th day by train (approx. € 15.00 per person including bike) or by taxi (approx. € 25.00 per person including bike). Any tourism tax that may be incurred is not part of the tour price and must therefore be paid on site at the hotel.
