Allgäu lakes: Weissensee radial tour
tour description
At the gates of Neuschwanstein Castle.
Welcome to the magical Allgäu. Enjoy the diversity of the lakes and the charming foothills of the Alps on this star bike tour. The world-famous castles of the Bavarian fairytale king Ludwig are just as much on your way as rustic cheese dairies and formerly well-fortified castles. Enjoy cycling through various Alpine valleys and along crystal-clear streams and lakes. You spend the night in the Boutique Hotel Dreimäderlhaus 3***s, which is idyllically situated directly on the Weißensee. Enjoy a breathtaking view of the romantic lake and the surrounding mountains from this box seat every day.
Your hotel: Boutique Hotel Dreimäderlhaus 3***
The owner-managed boutique Hotel Dreimäderlshaus is located directly on the beautiful Weissensee. From the inviting sun terrace, you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the lake and the surrounding mountains of the foothills of the Alps. The hotel has 13 rooms. The beautiful comfort rooms are located on the lake side (Cat. A) with a great view to the Weissensee and the standard rooms are located on the side or face to the street (Cat. B). The wonderful location at the lake and the warm hospitality are trademarks of the house. Experience this tradition of "wellbeing" and "belonging" anew every day. The excellent vegetarian/vegan breakfast with exclusively regional and often homemade and tasty ingredients is also a feast for the senses, so you can start the day with a happy feeling.
1. day Weissensee arrival
Individual travel to Weissensee. Enjoy the first rays of sunshine on the hotel terrace or take a walk on the lake shore.
2. day Forggensee and Hegratsrieder lake, approx. 50 km
Today the Forggensee and thus Bavaria's fifth largest lake is on your program. With a view of the surrounding mountains, you cycle comfortably along the Forggensee to the Illasbergsee. On your varied bike tour, there are always beautiful bathing opportunities. The one at Hegratsrieder lake with its wide reed belt is particularly idyllic. A romantic little chapel stands on a grassy hill on the north bank of the Hegratsried lake. The chapel, painted white, stands out from the green grass and blue sky when the weather is nice and is a great photo opportunity. Afterwards Füssen is quickly reached again. Take a boat tour in the afternoon, because you can enjoy an exclusive and unique view of Neuschwanstein Castle, the mountains of the Ammergau, Lechtal and Tannheim Alps and the silhouette of the city of Füssen.
3. day Round tour through three alpine valleys, approx. 50 km
Impressive and wildly romantic you will cycle through the Allgäu foothills of the Alps today. From the Weissensee, you first go to Pfronten, from there on forest paths into the wild and romantic Vilstal valley. Take a break (June to September) at the Kalbelehof Alpe and treat yourself to a snack with a unique view of the beautiful Vilstal. Enjoy the Allgäu cows roaming around freely here before you get back on your bikes and cycle into the Tannheimer Tal. Between the rugged peaks of the Allgäu Alps, the blue sky stretches over the high valley. Some even say that the Tannheimer Tal is the most beautiful alpine high valley in Europe! A leisurely long descent then takes you through the Engetal and Achtal back to Pfronten and the Weissensee.
4. day Neuschwanstein / Hohenschwangau castles, approx. 35 km
You cycle along the lakeside of the Weißensee to the Alatsee before you follow the Faulenbach stream to Füssen with its fascinating old town. Now you cycle in the footsteps of the Bavarian fairytale king directly to the spectacular and world-famous Neuschwanstein Castle, which towers on a rocky ledge above the valley. Today Neuschwanstein is one of the most visited palaces and castles in Europe! The nearby Hohenschwangau Castle is no less impressive. Take your time and visit at least one of the two castles, you will be amazed (your own early online reservation required).
5. day Cheese & Emmental Cycle Path, approx. 30-55 km
Who doesn't know him? The Emmental cheese. The Allgäu is world-famous for its delicious cheese specialties. On today's bike tour you will discover five small cheese dairies that still produce Allgäu Emmental and mountain cheese in the traditional way. Look forward to a tasting of this delicacy, which of course should not be missing. Today you cycle past cow pastures and through several farming hamlets which seem to be taken straight from the pages of a picture book. Make sure you take a break in Seeg at the beautiful rococo church of Ortisei and admire this little art jewel. Around 1730 the Rococo replaced the opulent, splendid style of the Baroque in European art and contrasted it with a light, almost imaginative decorative elegance, which Ortisei proudly presents to this day. In addition to all this culinary art and culture, beautiful bathing areas await you on your bike path.
6. day Castle round trip, approx. 50 km
You cycle from Weissensee to Hopfensee, where the ruins of Hopfen Castle lie 100 meters above the lake. The complex, built in the 11th century, is the oldest stone castle in the Alläu! Some remains of the wall that are worth seeing are still preserved. However, the highlight is the magnificent view from the castle over the Hopfensee and into the Ammergau Alps. The next must-sees are Hopferau Castle and the Mariahilf pilgrimage church. Germany's highest situated castle complex, the Falkenstein castle ruins, will always be in your sight while you cycle through the Vilstal past the Vilsegg castle ruins. Vilsegg Castle was built on a steep rock around 1225, directly on the previously well-traveled trade route, Via Claudia Augusta, which ran along the northern edge of the Vils Valley. You then cycle back to Füssen and to the Hotel am Weißensee on the Lech cycle path.
7. day Weissensee departure
The good times in the Allgäu passed far too quickly. If you want to discover even more and stay longer, you are welcome to book additional nights.

tour highlights
Weissensee
On the north shore of the lake of the same name, Weissensee is a picturesque holiday resort and part of the city of Füssen.
In the middle of a great lake landscape and within easy reach of Neuschwanstein Castle lies the health resort, which is known for its high recreational and leisure value, but also for its idyllic location: the lakes in the region, the nearby peaks of the Tannheimer Mountains and the Ammer Mountains invite you to a vacation full of enjoyment, relaxation and activity in Weissensee.
Forggensee
The Forggensee at the foot of Neuschwanstein Castle is one of the most beautiful water sports and leisure areas in the Bavarian foothills of the alps. What no one can tell with a full water level: Lake Forggensee is an artificial creation and was only created a few decades ago when the dam in Roßhaupten was built. In the spring of 1954, the Forggensee was completed. The 12 km long and up to 3 km wide Lech reservoir north of Füssen offers good sailing, surfing and fishing opportunities as well as a variety of beautifully situated bathing spots in front of the breathtaking panorama of the surrounding mountains.
A special highlight is to experience the Forggensee and the wonderful view of the mountains from the water, by ship with the Forggensee shipping.
Tannheim Valley
Picturesque alpine meadows, steep peaks, and tranquil villages -the Tannheimer Valley enjoys the reputation of being one of the “most beautiful alpine valleys in Europe”. Enjoy the idyllic valley in the heart of the Allgäu Alps at an altitude of 1,100 meters with its wonderful natural backdrop.
A special highlight is the view from above into the surrounding valleys. The Tannheimer cable railway takes you comfortably and safely into the wild and romantic mountains of the Tannheimer Valley at an altitude of 1786m. With a short hike (approx. 500m and 75 meters in altitude) you climb the Neunerköpfle, Tannheim's local mountain. From here a breathtaking view opens up at an altitude of 1862m.
If you prefer to stay in the valley, you can alternatively take a trip to the beautifully situated and deep blue Visalpsee lake. The Vilsalpsee nature reserve is one of the special treasures of the Tannheimer Tal region: home to many animals and plants, many of them rare and protected. A natural paradise with picturesque scenery - and has been a popular destination for visitors from all over the world for many years.
From the tourist information office in Tannheim you cycle south along the paved road to Vilsalpsee (approx. 4km each way).

Neuschwanstein Castle
The location of Neuschwanstein is unique. The people- shy king Ludwig II had built the castle to withdraw from the public. Today Neuschwanstein is one of the most visited castles in Europe. Around 1.3 million people visit "the castle of the fairy tale king" every year. In summer, an average of more than 6,000 visitors a day throng through rooms that were intended for a single resident.

Hohenschwangau Castle
Hohenschwangau Castle is located directly opposite Neuschwanstein Castle in Hohenschwangau near Füssen. At the age of 18, Crown Prince Maximilian of Bavaria discovered the scenic Hohenschwangau castle ruins, known at the time as "Schwanstein", on a hike. Spontaneously he decided to buy and rebuild. In the years 1833 to 1837 he had the remains of the medieval castle expanded into a romantic residential palace. The interior and exterior design, the furnishing of the rooms and the more than 90 wall paintings are coordinated and form a harmonious whole. The complex has been preserved as an extraordinary monument from the Romantic era.
Füssen
The Füssen lute and violin makers made Lechstadt famous throughout Europe. In 1562 the first lute maker guild in Europe was founded here. The Museum of the City of Füssen in the St. Mang Monastery therefore houses a collection of historical lutes and violins. Medieval streets and town houses, baroque churches and monasteries, small, fine shops create a very special atmosphere in the romantic old town. In summer, the many street cafes offer an almost Italian flair. The city is dominated by the High Castle with its colorful illusion paintings.
Rococo church of St. Ulrich
St. Ulrich is the Catholic parish church in Seeg in the Swabian district of Ostallgäu. It belongs to the dean's office in Marktoberdorf in the diocese of Augsburg and is one of the most important rococo churches in Bavaria. From the outside it is a completely normal Bavarian church, with an onion-shaped tower and no large ornamentation - from the inside, however, it amazes with its exuberant Rococo style. The frescoes and paintings by Johann Baptist Enderle (1725-98), curved shell-like ornaments, the colored and seemingly endless main fresco on the ceiling, invite you to marvel.
Because of its resemblance to the famous Wies pilgrimage church in Steingaden, it is also called "Kleine Wies".
Hopferau Castle
The origins of the oldest castle in the Ostallgäu district go back to the year 1468, when the knight Sigmund von Freyberg zu Eisenberg had the building built. The three-storey house was the center of a small new lordship that was created through the division of inheritance. In 1504 the castle was given a chapel, which today functions as the village church. Hopferau Castle offers guided tours through its historic interior.
Ostallgäu castle region
