tour description

From Stralsund to Usedom

Discover the beauties of Usedom, the ‚Bath tub of Berlin‘ and enjoy the silent cycle stages on the coast of the Baltic Sea. Delight yourself on silent angles and forests, bizarre coastal lines, the romantic reet belt of the Oderhaff, idyllic lakes and biotopes with grey herons colonies. At Usedom attracts the splendid 40 km long phantasmagoric beach and nostalgic coastal resorts. Stroll along the promenade from Bansin, Heringsdorf to Ahlbeck and relax on the wooden sea bridge.

3. day Greifswald - Northern Usedom approx. 45 - 60 km

Through the silent back-country you will get to Wolgast, the gate to island Usedom. On untroubled bikeways you cycle over the island to the seaside. Over Trassenheide the way goes though dike forests to the seaside resort Zinnowitz. Accommodation in Zinnowitz/neighbourhood or Karlshagen.

4. day Northern Usedom - Bansin / Heringsdorf / Ahlbeck approx. 22 - 34 km

tour highlights

Nikolai church

The oldest of the three Stralsund parish churches is the monumental St. Nikolaikirche at the Alter Markt. It has been in the stage of a comprehensive restoration for years. Even now, with its two imposing organs, Buchholz and Schuke, it is one of the most beautiful sacral buildings in Northern Europe.

Nikolai-Kirche

St. Johannis monastery

The peculiarity of this monastery is the historically evolved side-by-side and interrelatedness of various architectural periods, the individual phases of the dominant Gothic, Baroque and Classicism. The chapter hall with its cross vault and its gothic wall paintings offers a fascinating atmosphere for concerts and lectures.

Caspar-David-Friedrich

He is the most famous son of the city of Greifswald - the great painter of Romanticism: Caspar David Friedrich. His paintings with the motifs of the monastery ruins of Eldena, the market square or the silhouette of Greifswald are known to people from all over the world and have made the city famous beyond the national borders. A pictorial trail is reminiscent of its traces in the University and Hansestadt.

Der Streckelberg

The legendary Streckelsberg is with its 60 meters the highest elevation on the island of Usedom. "Witterbarg" (= white mountain) used to be called by the fishermen and peasants the Streckelsberg, when the wind still carried the sand of its peak up to the fields of Koserow and Loddin.

Atelier Otto Niemeyer-Holstein

The studio Otto Niemeyer-Holstein is one of the special attractions of the island of Usedom:

A refuge in which art and nature meet directly. The property, whose unique architecture, with its gardens and sculptures, already appears in itself as a work of art, is reminiscent of the eminent painter of the German East seas: Otto Niemeyer-Holstein (1896-1984).

Sea bridge Heringsdorf

About 20 sea bridges rise up along the extensive expanse of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern into the Baltic Sea. They were originally designed not only as promenades extended into the sea, but also as a landing strip for incoming visitors of the seaside: in this way tourists could travel directly to their resort by ship 100 years ago without first having to change into small shaky boats off the coast, Who completed the last meters on the water to the holiday resort.

Heringsdorf beach

"The beach is stone-free, its sand grainy white and only a little brownish in autumn and spring. The sea has a sandy and light background, runs flat from the coast to greater depths, is mildly saline and looks blue in the sun Thunderstorm green, white in the storm and black in the night.
