On this bike tour you stay in small selected typical Moselle wine-growing villages. To experience the typical Moselle life off the beaten tourist track. Traveling on the bike and marvel at all the major and minor attractions of the Moselle valley. Of course, you also discover charming towns such as Bernkastel-Kues, Traben-Trarbach and Cochem. Additionally you will get to know the little-known valleys of the Moselle that provide excellent cycle paths and lead down from the height into the Moselle valley.

During the walking tour, you will learn what makes Germany's oldest city unique. Route: The tour begins at the Porta Nigra, crosses the Main Market, passes the Cathedral and the Church of Our Lady, the Roman Imperial Throne Room (Konstantin-Basilika), and ends at the Electoral Palace.

Rheinisches Landesmuseum in Trier
The Trier Landesmuseum is one of the most important archaeological museums in Germany, documenting 200,000 years of history and cultural development in the entire region, from prehistoric times to the end of the 18th century. Approximately 4,500 objects are on display in the museum, covering an area of 3,500 m² (37,674 ft²); among them are the largest mosaic collection north of the alps, the gigantic stone burial monuments from Neumagen with vivid scenes from daily life and the world’s largest Roman gold coin hoard with over 2,600 gold coins weighing 18.5 kg (41 lbs).

Porta Nigra Trier
The Porta Nigra (Latin for Black Gate) in Trier is a former Roman city gate. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is a well-known landmark of the city. The name Porta Nigra dates back to the Middle Ages. Another name in the Middle Ages was Porta Martis (the gate of Mars). The city gate was built around 180 AD as the northern entrance to the city of Augusta Treverorum (Augustus city in the land of the Treveri), today's Trier.

Kaiserthermen Trier
The Kaiserthermen in Trier are the remains of a large Roman bath complex, which can still be visited today as an impressive ruin. It has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site along with the other interesting buildings in Roman Trier. The complex was built around 300 AD as a monumental representative building of the Emperor Constantius Chlorus and his son Constantine, who had made Trier their residence.

Amphitheater Trier
The amphitheater in Trier dates back to Roman times, which, after its completion around 100 AD,
accommodated 18,000 visitors. During the summer, guided tours of the amphitheater, where an actor takes on the role of gladiator Valerius and tells of his career as a gladiator. In addition, every year in August, the amphitheater is the venue of Germany's biggest Roman games, the Brot & Spiele festival, the scene of imitated gladiatorial fights that thrill audiences.

Look forward to Trier, to interesting Roman monuments such as the Porta Nigra, the amphitheater, the Imperial baths and the Roman bridge. Explore on your Tour lively places, picturesque houses, the Electoral Palace, the imposing cathedral or one of the many interesting museums (arrival per train possible/ parking, rental bike at the hotel).

Much time you have on this day, so you can even spend the morning in a relaxed atmosphere in Trier. But if you want you can start early and get to know many discoveries. Shortly after Trier you should take a break in Pfalzel. Look forward to a small Mosel town with charming spots and historic houses. The church square even features the oldest stone house in Germany. Then back on the bike you pass the mouth of the Kyll into the Moselle. Let yourself be tempted here to take a short detour to the Kylltal valley to the castle Ramstein (+ 9 km). Afterward you continuing rolling through the Moselle valley, marveling at the old ferry tower of Schweich or at the reconstruction and the remains of the Roman villa Urbana in the vineyards of Longuich. Nowadays you see the East Wing (bathing sector) from the county villa dated the end of the second century. Also Mehring has to offer next to cozy narrow streets and wineries as well Roman culture. Marvel at the reconstruction and the remains of the Villa Rustica, a partially reconstructed Roman estate. Already the Romans knew to appreciate the pleasures of the country life and recovered in their magnificent country villas from the daily stress of the nearby city Augusta Treveroru, the Roman Trier, which already had more tham 100.000 inhabitants at that time.

Famous wine villages enrich your cycling trip today. Just behind Leiwen you will discover the large lettering in the vineyards, the famous vineyard Trittenheimer Altärchen. Just across the Moselle bridge and you are right in the wine village Trittenheim. A few kilometers later, already attracts Neumagen-Dhron, the oldest wine village in Germany. Marvel here about the replica of the famous stone reliefs "wine vessel with cheerful helmsman", which is located in the town on the roadside. And again a few kilometers later, you marvel at the Roman wine press just before Piesport. Stroll through the town, because there are a lot of adorable houses, where mostly wine was made since ancient times. Also look forward to the overnight stay, because Lieser offers next to beautiful and ancient wineries also the Wilhelminian style Lieser Schloss, the parish church built in 1782 and the old post court, a complex of buildings dating from the 16th - 18th century .

A full program is waiting for you today, because the two famous Moselle towns of Bernkastel-Kues and Traben Trarbach want to be visited. Marvel at the old town of Bernkastel-Kues and stroll leisurely through the streets. Presented like a piece of jewelry the somewhat sloping market square with its stately half-timbered houses. You want to discover more? Borrow an audio guide at the tourist office. It will entertain you for 3 hours with exciting stories, anecdotes and much worth knowing about Bernkastel-Kues. After cycling about 20 km in shallow Moselle valley you will reach the imposing gate of Traben Trarbach. Enjoy the flair and charm of the town, marvel at the architectural treasures and Art Nouveau and Belle Epoque. A visit to the Wine Museum is recommended before you swing back on the bikes. Be sure to insert another pause in Enkirch, which is considered to be a treasury of Rheinische half-timbered constructions. Stroll through the small town, pay attention to the beautifully carved magnificent half-timbered buildings and street signs. Then you cycle relaxed through the famous wine growing region Zeller Schwarze Katz to Bullay.

Following the narrow and wide Moselle loops you cycle leisurely through the Moselle Valley. Discover the romantic town of Beilstein, which is considered by many Moselle visitors as one of the most beautiful and romantic Moselle towns. Quickly it becomes clear during a tour, why the place has served as a backdrop for many movies. And still a highlight is waiting for you: Cochem lures with its lovely old town and romantic castle Reichsburg. Marvel at the castle, high enthroned on the keep and look at the needlepoint defense turrets in various sizes. Take part in a tour of the castle, find a nice cafe in the old town or escape via chairlift up to lofty heights and the best views over Cochem. Look forward to Pommern, one of the oldest wine villages along the Moselle. Historical findings document a settlement by the Celts already more than 2000 years ago. The Romans cultivated vineyards and grew tropical fruits. From this time the wine village got its name: Pomaria - the fruit garden.

In the morning attracts a trip (8 km) to the medieval Castle Eltz, one of the most beautiful and best preserved castles in Germany. Wonderfully romantic and nestled in a pristine nature, it acts as a true fairy-tale castle, inviting and majestic at the same time. Take part in an informative tour of the castle, discover the treasure chamber and enjoy the magnificent views. Then you will cycle back to the
Moselle bike path and enjoy its last few kilometers again you pass typical Moselle wine places like Kobern-Gondorf and Winningen. In Koblenz at the Deutsches Eck the Moselle flows into the Rhine and therefore you will spend this evening on both, the Moselle and the Rhine.

Today after breakfast your nice bike tour ends. From Koblenz main station you have very good connections in all directions. For those who wish to return to Trier, we recommend our practical return transfer service which takes you back to the start hotel with luggage and private bikes from the hotel in Koblenz. Departure is always in the morning at 09.00 clock, lasts about 2 hours, advance reservation required.

Arrival by train

From Koblenz Trier is easily accessible by train. We recommend to take a taxi from the station to get to our partner hotels in Trier. Current schedule information and price information can be found at: www.bahn.de.

Parking facilities at the start hotel

Our partner hotels in Trier always provide parking facilities. Sometimes even free, for the entire duration of your bike trip. There are always plenty of parking spots available, no pre-reservation is necessary. Detailed information on parking at your hotel, you will receive together with the detailed travel documents two weeks prior to departure.

Condition of cycling path

The quality of the bike trail is very good. There are practical no unpaved or poorly developed path. The route runs almost exclusively on paved roads and is very well signposted. The volume of traffic varies, but between Trier and Cochem there is almost always a seperate bike trail on the right or left shore side, off the main road. Only during your last day you have to cycle a section on a wide bicycle lane next to the main road. Detailed information about which shore side is best to cycle on, you will receive together with the detailed travel documents two weeks prior to departure.

Available rental bikes

If you choose to rent a Velociped-rental bike for the tour, we take it to your first hotel and pick it up at your destination. You can choose between ladies´and men's bicycles either with 7-speed gear shift and coaster brake or 27-speed gear shift and freewheel or electric bikes. All ladies' bikes have a low opening that makes mounting and dismounting much easier. The bikes are suitable for all ladies from 150 cm in height and for all gentlemen from 165 cm in height. You simply specify your wishes at time of booking.

Transfer back to the starting point of the journey

Daily at 9.00 am there is the possibility to transfer back to Trier with a small bus (with bike trailer).
Arrival at ca. 11.00 am. The driver comes to pick you up at your hotel and has enough space for you, your luggage and where required your own bicycle. The bus takes you back to your first hotel, thus ensuring a perfect return service without transfer and the hassle of hauling luggage.

Train and bus in the Moselle Valley

Directly in the Moselle valley is not always a railway line. After Trier the train is leaving the Moselle Valley and the nearest station is not before Bullay. After only a few kilometres, the railway disappears in the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Tunnel and only reappears in Cochem. From Cochem the train runs completely in the Moselle Valley to Koblenz.

In the period from 1.5. - 31.10. a bus operates daily between Trier and Bullay with a max. capacity of 22 bicycles.

Boat trip on the Moselle River

From April to October there are many passenger boats on the Moselle. Boat docks are available in almost all places in both directions. Often tours are offered. Information about the exact departure times you find at the bulletin boards of the shipping companies. A regular ferry traffic exists between Trier and Treis-Karden.

A possibly resulting tourist tax is not part of the travel price and therefore it has to be paid locally in the Hotel.

Passport and visa requirements

For EU citizens, there are no special passport or visa requirements and no health formalities to be considered for this trip.

Travel insurance

The tour price already includes the statutory insolvency insurance. In addition, we recommend that you take out travel cancellation insurance upon receipt of your travel confirmation in order to protect yourself against financial disadvantages in the event of travel cancellation, interruption of travel, illness or accident.
