When rivers meet

Cycling vacation along the Fulda

Discover this idyllic river touring bike route, still unknown to most cyclists. Start in romantic Rhön at 950m and follow the well-signposted Fulda bikeway down into the valley. Trough meadows and fields you cycle, mainly directly on the beautiful course of the river. You pass ravishingly beautiful half-timbered towns and cycle along the densely wooded Voglesberg. Then you whizz snugly on asphalt bike lanes through the river valley. It’s nice that you have enough time getting to know the manifold sights of this region! You will be crazy about the baroque quarter in Fulda, with cathedral, castle, orangery and nobeless palace. The acme is Hann. Münden, a half-timbered town of European status. Here at the confluence of Fulda and Werra your trip ends or you might prolong your cycling holiday along the Weser.

This is how beautiful it is at the Fulda river

Cycling on the Fulda Cycle Route R1

The cycle route is certified with four stars by the ADFC e. V. and thus one of the best in Germany. Rolling along on easily passable surfaces - often directly along the water - is a real pleasure. From its source at 950 meters above sea level in Gersfeld an der Rhön, the route also descends almost steadily to the river's kiss in Hann. Münden, where the Fulda and Werra join.

Half-timbered houses, castles and palaces

Along the way there are plenty of sights worth seeing: the castle town of Schlitz, for example, in Fulda the town palace including palace park and orangery, the statue of Hercules in Kassel's Wilhelmshöhe mountain park, as well as half-timbered houses galore in the idyllic towns of Hann. Münden, Rotenburg a. d. Fulda, Melsungen or Schlitz.

Art and museums

Pomp and pageantry can be marveled at in the historic rooms of Fulda's city palace. In the documenta city of Kassel, art lovers are lured out of the saddle: the Neue Galerie, the Orangerie and the Grimmwelt are worth a longer stop. A unique experience is a visit to the famous Bad Hersfeld Festival in romantic old walls.

In the "Wortreich", an interactive museum, you can learn everything about language and communication. The range is wide. All along the Fulda Cycle Path you will find art, culture and concerts.

Culinary and liquid

From wine (the Spätlese was "invented" in Fulda) to beer (try the Wiesenbier brewed with Rhön malting barley in Fulda) to mineral water from the Rhön - cyclists will not stay thirsty. And there are all kinds of things to keep you hungry, too. Here it's all about the sausage: Schlitzer Krautwurst, Schwartenwurst or Ahle Wurst. A delicious specialty is also the Bloatz, bread dough topped with potatoes, onions and bacon and baked in the oven.

Pure nature

The vast expanses of the Rhön Biosphere Reserve at the beginning of the bike path and the densely wooded Vogelsberg Mountains line the route. You cycle through meadows, fields and green meadow landscapes along the idyllic course of the Fulda River. There are many pretty villages to discover. Which one will you give the first prize to? The Fulda Valley is a gem in the middle of Germany!
