Connect two beautiful and famous Baltic Sea cities on this bike tour. In between you will feel a lot of the Baltic Sea, because your bike path often runs in the immediate vicinity of the sea. In the morning you will get a breath of fresh sea air, at lunchtime you will enjoy a wide variety of stops in small harbor towns, in the afternoon you will enjoy the wonderful sandy beaches and in the evening you may discover one or the other traditional sailor's pub.

Highlights

Town Hall Kiel
After a four-year period of construction, on 12 November 1911 Kaiser Wilhelm II inaugurated the Kiel Town Hall, designed by Hermann Billing. Its 106-meter high tower is reminiscent of Venice's Campanile.

Tour

Arrive in Kiel and experience the city and its sights, such as the town hall, the maritime museum or the botanical garden, on a walk.

Under your own management you are leaving Kiel by boat to the Baltic seaside resort Laboe. From Laboe's lively beach and pretty port you continue your tour to Stein and to the seaside resort Holm. Overnight in Schönberg or surroundings.

Seaside resort towns, wide beaches, and stately manor houses in the country are quite enchanting. Spend the night in either Lütjenburg or Hohwacht.

Today, you will leave the breath-taking scenery around Hohwacht Bay behind and cycle past Weissenhäuser Beach to Oldenburg. Today’s destination is Heiligenhafen near the island of Fehmarn.

It’s not far to Lübeck Bay. Continue on past Dahme and Kellenhausen to Grömitz. Grömitz is one of the oldest and largest resort towns in the Baltic region.

Cycle south to the little Holstein city of Neustadt and later mostly along the beaches and promenades of Haffkrug and Scharbeutz to the beach at Timmendorf.

Make your way to Travemünde. Care for a swim? There are also many cafés, restaurants, boutiques and shops to lose sense of time in. Spend the night in Lübeck.

After breakfast ends your bicycle holiday in Lübeck.

Worth knowing about the bike tour Kiel - Lübeck

Below you will find specific information about the Kiel - Lübeck bike trail and surroundings. If you have further questions about this trip, you simply call us: Phone: 06421 – 886890.

Arrival by train
Kiel is easily accessible from all major cities in Germany by train. We recommend to take a taxi from the station to get to our partner hotels in Kiel. Current schedule information and price information can be found at: www.bahn.de.

Train schedule information

Parking facilities at the hotel
While staying at the hotel you can use the hotel's car park for 10€ per day. After checking out the car can be parked on the adjacent parking lot or the parking garage of the Sophienhof. At the reception you will receive a weekly ticket for 35.00 EUR.

Alternatively, free parking is possible about 400 meters from the hotel (unguarded, according to availability).

Condition of cycle paths

Quality of roads and traffic:
The quality of the Baltic Sea Cycle Route varies extremely. There is no continuous bike path along the coast, but the route often leads in parts inland. You cycle on many different undergrounds. Close to the coast and particularly on the dam paths in Fehmarn there might be sections where the path are in poor condition, but they can be easily bypassed. Alternatively, suggestions can be found in the maps and explained in the text. Otherwise, the route runs mostly on quiet country roads, paved bike paths or forest and field trails. Busy ways are very rare and usually only for short sections. Sometimes the tour might be difficult due to the strong wind in the coastal area.

Signage:
Along the Baltic Sea Cycle Route, there is a uniform signage in both directions. This ranges from Flensburg to Travemünde and always uses the same logo. Only the sign density varies along the route. On a first stretch between Flensburg and Nieby the signs are in a large number and good visible. Later on the signs are sparse, but good visible at the main intersections. From the town Stein behind Kiel you then have to get used to it that the logo of the Baltic Sea Cycle Route has to share the space on a plate with other signages. Therefore, the signposting is a little bit unclear. The Baltic Sea Cycle Route is not suitable for tandems.

Available rental bikes

You have the choice between ladies' and men's touring bikes with back-pedalling or freewheel (both with hub gears).

The touring bikes with back-pedalling have 7 or 8 gears (depending on availability).

The touring bikes with freewheel have 7 gears. On request and depending on availability, we can also offer 24-speed touring bikes with freewheel. The request for 24 gears will then be noted, but cannot be guaranteed.

We also offer 7/8-speed electric bikes (all women's bikes) with freewheel or coaster brake (subject to availability).

Please let us know your bike preference when you make your booking.

Return to starting point of the journey
The return trip to Kiel is easy by train. The journey takes around 1 hour 30 minutes.

A possibly applicable tourism tax is not part of the travel price and therefore has to be paid at the hotel locally. The use of the rental bikes during additional nights is possible for a surcharge. Please state this request when booking.
