Tour

Arrive early in Germany’s northernmost town; loafing through the delightful lanes of the Old town or along the port’s promenade is worthwhile. For more than 400 years Flensburg was governed by the Danish monarchy and 700 years of history have shaped the fjord-town. You will be supplied with roadsters at the hotel.

You will reach one of Germany’s most beautiful water castles in Glücksburg biking along the Flensburg Fjord. Visiting the northernmost rose garden in Germany, which is situated right next to the castle, is also recommendable: Just as many other rose-lovers from all over the world you will be amazed by the queen of flowers presenting itself on an area of about one hectare. After this wonderful stop you will continue cycling around Gelting bay and pass through the contemplative Angeln in order to arrive in Kappeln.

Before continuing your trip you should absolutely spare some time for a visit of the lovely small town of Kappeln. Interesting cairns and the famous seaside resort of Damp are on your way today. After passing the mansion of Ludwigsburg you will reach Eckernförde. The palm trees of the marvellous beach invite you to enjoy the southern flair while the picturesque Old town with its half-timbered houses offers to take a nice walk only a few steps away from the beach’s promenade. Crossing the harbour’s bascule bridge you will enter the quarter of Borby. Here, constructed only in 2002, the water front with its numerous sea-statues designed by statuaries is the main eye-catcher. You will spend the night in Eckernförde and surroundings.

Today’s route will lead you from the bay of Eckernförde to the bay of Kiel. You can be looking forward to today’s destination, the town of Kiel with its modern architecture and the ancient buildings of many centuries of age. Walk across the bridge to the Norwegian Terminal, visit the museum of navigation and the Old Town of Kiel. You should not miss Kiel’s northernmost harbour, Schilksee, nor the Tiessenkai with its nostalgic ambience created by the old cargo saliers lying at the piers, the ancient branch offices, the former stacking house and the lighthouse of Holtenau.

In the morning you will board a small ferry taking you to Laboe. You are welcome to visit the old campground where a marine biological station has been situated since May 1999. This private station offers the unique chance to get an inside view of the underwater world of the Baltic Sea. Or would you prefer visiting submarine 995 dating back from World War II, today situated in front of the Marine cenotaph and to be visited as a technical museum? Passing the lively beach of Laboe and its exquisite harbour you will ride on to Stein. Neat coastal resorts, more beaches and noble properties in the hinterland fascinate you on this stage.

You will leave behind the beautiful landscape of the Hohwacht bay with its long sand beaches and its steep coast of up to 20 metres depth today. Passing the beach of Weidenhausen you will arrive in Oldenburg (Holstein). Either the small town of Heiligenhafen or Großenbrode situated not far from the island of Fehmarn will be your destination for the day.

After only a few kilometres you will switch into the next bay of the Baltic Sea: Lübeck bay. Biking past Dahme and Kellenhusen, Grömitz is worth a stop. It is one of the oldest and biggest seaside resorts of the Baltic Sea. Surfers and sailors get ready during the first days of spring, the promenades are lively meeting points during the summer and once autumn has broken the seaside invites for long walks. After a well-deserved break your bike trip continues southwards to the Holsatian town of Neustadt by the Baltic Sea.

What at great day for biking! Mostly along the Baltic Sea’s beaches and the promenades of the seaside resorts Haffkrug, Scharbeutz and Timmendorfer Strand you will bike to Travemünde. Bathing is possible at numerous places along your path. Along the beaches you will find a colourful variety of cafés, restaurants, boutiques and shops. You should definitely not fail to see the monasteries, churches, narrow paths and proud middle-class houses of Lübeck. Take a walk to the famous Buddenbrock-house which had once been property of the Mann family and taste the Lübeck marzipan in one of the many shops. The view over the Old town from the Petri-church’s steeple of 50 metres height is magnificent!

Your lovely bike trip ends after breakfast. It is either possible to travel home on your own or to continue your trip along the Baltic Sea to Stralsund or Usedom.
