The whole world talks about the Danube bike trail! But who among you really knows this amazing route along the German Danube? This region is one of the continents most beautiful riverside landscapes. Next to a variety of cultural sights, such as the pompous traces left by the baroque, many untouched floodplains areas make this region so worthwhile. Discover the headwaters where the young Danube trickles away close to Möhringen and enjoy the old riverside paths, reinvented as bike trails and paved for the most part today.
We recommend arriving early to have the time to visit the source of this major river.
Lets get on our bikes at last! Full of energy you will get to know the "Baar", a very unique landscape. We suggest a side trip to the Entenburg castle in Pfohren before it gets exciting in Immendingen: For the most part of the year, the small Danube disappears in the porous limestone! Instead of mouthing into the Black Sea as documented by the maps, the masses of water pass by Lake Constance and reach the North Sea via the Rhine River. A unique spectacle of nature! After a well-deserved break you can roll comfortably down the narrow valley of the Swabian Alb to Mühlheim.
The most exciting part of your trip lies ahead of you now: the Danube gorge! Between Fridingen and Beuron all there is is the most beautiful landscape, the bike trail and the cyclists. You will pass in between towering lime stone rocks and reach Sigmaringen, the former capital of the correspondent principality, in no time. The Residenzschloss is still inhabited today and can be visited on a guided tour.
You will trave back in time today: The Heuneburg museum of Hundersingen is situated in a former barn, Zehntscheuer. It offers today an overview over Celtic times and exposes interesting findings from that period. As you continue your way, the valley gets wider and wider. Archaeological trails take you past impressive barrows to the Heuneburg, one of the most important Celtic residences in the north of the Alps.
Today is the day of the castles, monasteries and palaces. Let the Danube take you to Zwiefaltendorf with its beautiful water castle. You should not miss the Benedictine monastery with its neat baroque and rococo architecture either. Another, Premonstratensian, baroque monastery can be visited in Obermarchtal. Passing the quaint half-timbered style small town Munderkingen you will arrive in the middle of Ehingens Old Town.
You will leave the Danube for a short part of the route today and cycle through the Danube valley via Allmendingen and Schelklingen before reaching Blaubeuren. Behind the monastery you will find the famous Blautopf, a strong karstic spring and the entrance of a great cave system. From here on, you will follo the Blau River, accompanied by medieval castles and ruins guiding the way to the Swabian-Bavarian twin-city Ulm. During a tour around town you will have the chance to marvel at the word?s highest steeple! What about climbing this unique piece of architecture? Or do you prefer discovering the picturesque fishermens and tanners district with its warped houses by foot?
