Concerning culture and landscape, one highlight chases the other on this bike trip. Pass Donauried and cross the impressive wetlands by the mouthings of the Danubes side rivers, displaying a varied biota. Nature offers another highlight between Weltenburg und Kelheim: The Danube Gorge. Experiencing this phenomenon is a unique adventure! After this breathtaking highlight, the Danube takes you to a great number of worthwhile former residencies with their historical centres. In each of them different gorgeous Baroque and Renaissance buildings wait to catch your attention.
It is possible to arrive by train/ parking facilities at the hotel (fee: about 50 Euro).
In a decent pace, the route between Ulm and Dillingen passes in no time. Elchingen with its worthwhile pilgrimage church and the rococo-style Church of Our Lady in Günzburg lie on your way to the former residency of Dillingen.
Your first stop today will be Pfalz-Neuburg castle in Höchstädt. After a relaxing break, you will continue to Donauwörth through the wide floodplains of the Danube. Donauwörth is situated at the mouthing of the Wörnitz, where the most important trade route between Nürnberg and Augsburg crossed the Danube back in the days. The Käthe-Kruse- doll museum and noble middle-class houses can be visited here.
Today is the day of castle visits! You can be looking forward to seeing Leipheim castle, Bertoldsheim castle and Stepperg castle. But the highlight of the day is the most beautiful Renaissance palace of the Danube situated in Neuburg. Through wide forests you will reach Ingolstadt with its impressive medieval city wall.
Via Bad Göggingen you will arrive at the monastery of Weltenburg. Marvel at the impressive Benedictine monastery, often mentioned among the most beautiful ones in Bavaria and do not miss to taste the local kitchen in the monasterys beer garden. Afterwards, nature offers an absolute highlight: You will cross the Danube Gorge by boat (6 km). Experiencing this phenomenon is a unique adventure!
