Wadden Sea and dream-ships
Enjoy this very special bike tour. We will take you from the Bremer Town Musicians to the Wadden Sea and the Kiel Canal with its large “dreamboats”. Fascination, dreams of a carefree life of luxury, wanderlust. A passing passenger ship in the Kiel Canal leaves no even a landlubber cold. Like floating palaces the cruise ships slide majestically through the Schleswig Holstein Meadows, bright white at day, festively lighted at night. Magnificent box seats are everywhere, at the ferry docks, on the high bridges, at the locks and in the restaurants and cafes right and left of the channel. Unique is the ship welcoming station in Rendsburg. Here all passing ships are introduced and welcomed by dipping its flag and playing their national anthem. Over 99 km you follow the Kiel Canal to Kiel, where it flows into the Baltic Sea. You cycle mostly in flat to slightly hilly terrain on mostly unpaved or paved rural roads and occasionally on small side streets.
Look forward to Bremen. The city presents itself historic, maritime and alive, featuring the town hall and Roland that are among the world heritage of mankind. By late afternoon briefing and arrangement of bicycles.
Wonderful open spaces, charming villages and meadows marshland shape your bike trail through the beautiful Marshland. A fresh breeze, pleasant smell of salt in the air and lots of sea and gulls show you in the afternoon, that you have arrived on the coast. In Bremerhaven you should visit the "Schaufenster Fischereihafen”, a cultural and communication center with small shops, arts and crafts, restaurants and fish cooking studios.
The first kilometers you cycle through the large international port with huge plants and the flair of the free port. Passing old lighthouses your beautiful bike trail leads directly along the coast of the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea with wonderful white beaches and colorful beach chairs. Visit the worth seeing Information Centre Wadden Sea National Park (UNESCO World Heritage Site) in Cuxhaven and marvel at the port bastion "Alte Liebe" and the lighthouse "Dicke Berta".
Today you have much free time because the majority of the day's tour you can master very easily by passenger ferry. The small ferry will bring you in about 2 hours from Cuxhaven on the mouth of the river Elbe to Brunsbüttel. Enjoy this almost bike-free day: take a guided tour through the mud flats, go for a swim in the heated outdoor pool on the Elbdeich with a fantastic view to the channel entrance and the large ships, marvel at the powerful waterways blockageee at the Kiel Canal, stroll through the Old Town of Brunsbüttel or pamper yourself in the unique beach bar "Beachclub Copacanala".
Look forward to an eventful day along the 1895 inaugurated Kiel Canal. Shortly after Brunsbüttel you cycle to Neuendorf the lowest land point in Germany. Hard to believe, you are 3.54 m below sea level. Through small idyllic rural villages you cycle to the health resort Berg, this is one of the most beautiful places in the Geest-Town Dittmarschen. Climb the striking 21 m high observation tower and enjoy a fantastic view of fertile land, dense forests, lush meadows, open fields and gentle hills. Passing the pilot station where pilots from Kiel and Brunsbüttel replace each other.
You ride to the charming garrison town of Rendsburg. Stroll through the town and marvel at the old railway bridge about the remarkable transporter bridge.
How many cruise ships have you counted yesterday? Will it now be even more? You'll spend a further adventure day at the Kiel Canal. You'll cycle through one of the most beautiful hills of Schleswig-Holstein, past glacial lakes to Holtenauer bridge. Enjoy the wonderful view out to the Baltic Sea and get get excited to see the maritime city of Kiel. Climb up the 106 m high tower of the town hall to gain a great overview, marvel at the “Hörnbrücke”, one of the few tri-sectional flap bridges in Europe. It is opened daily 12-times for approximately 15 minutes. Also you can visit the Maritime Museum in Kiel which is located in the former fish market from 1909.
