Baltic Sea-North Sea: round trip
duration: 8 days

dates of arrival:
23.05.2012 - 22.10.2012 daily

From the beach chair to the wadden sea

The round trip between the Baltic Sea and the North Sea.

Cycle where Vikings once walked, from coast to coast - from Schleswig, along the inlet called the ‘Schlei’, through the ‘Hüttener Mountains’ (hills with elevations of up to 106 m / 348 ft), to the rivers Treene and Eider, the North Sea Coast, Friedrichstadt, and Husum.

1. day  Schleswig arrival

You should allow enough time for a visit of the oldest town in Schleswig-Holstein and the baroque Gottorf castle. Don’t miss out the old fishing settlement Holm and the Haithabu Viking Museum before you rush away on your bike seat. Arrival possible from Hamburg by German railway/ parking site in Schleswig/Fahrdorf - rental bike at the hotel.

2. day  Schleswig - Kappeln 50 km

At the North Bank of the Schlei you cycle through old fishing villages past marinas and follow winding roads through the slightly hilly holiday region to Kappeln at the Baltic Sea. Allow yourself some extra time to take a sun bath on the way, jump into the cool water and explore the mariner’s church of Arnis (Germany’s smallest town).

3. day  Kappeln - Eckernförde 55 km

Past large and small, hidden and public bathing locations you cycle along the southern bank of the river Schlei and through the midland Schwansen to Eckernförde. The historic spa at the Balic sea has a worth-seeing baroque-classical old town. You can see a wooden folding bridge (1872) and old small corner shops. Stroll along the beach which has a lenght of 4 km or try smoked fish fresh from the cutter.

4. day  Eckernförde -Owschlag 45 km

Take a deep breath and enjoy wonderful bike routes to the lake Wittensee and through the Hüttener Berge nature park; the Scheelsberg (160 m), the highest elevation of the park is hardly challenging.

5. day  Owschlag - Friedrichsstadt 60 km

Today you cycle from east to west along small channels, rivers and lakes. You pass wide moor areas and discover the idyllically located but sparsely populated villages of the marshland. Look forward to the climatic spa Friedrichstadt with its Dutch flair and the „Treppen-Giebelhäusern“ at the market place. Just look at people, a smelling coffee, a seat unter the sunshade – what a perfect end of the day!

6. day  Friedrichsstadt - Husum 55 km

The wadden sea is calling! Is there any water or not? After 17 km you will be sure. In Tönning it’s worth visiting the Multimar Wattforum, where it’s possible to explore the world of the wadden sea and to make exciting discoveries. You will surely remember some of it on your bike trip through the „Salzwiesen“, where many birds are native, before reaching the gates of the old trading and harbour town of Husum. Enjoy the harbour atmosphere, stroll through the historic alleys of the cohesive Old Town, with it’s gas lanterns or try to get on the sea – on a shrimp cutter or more comfortably on an excursion boat.

7. day  Husum - Schleswig 55 km

Maybe a visit to the Theodor-Storm house or the nautic museum in Husum before you are going to pedal again? Enjoy the beautiful bike routes once again, take a break in the archaelogical park Dannewerk and take some time for Schleswig, to admire the old Viking ship.

8. day  Schleswig departure

If you wish we will gladly book a weeks extension for you at the Baltic Sea or the North Sea.
