The Sudeten Highlands biketrail

Cultural, traditional and historic. Experiences on the bicycle combined with a trip to the past. On this round trip from/to Wroclaw (Breslau) you can enjoy wonderful biking routes through the river valleys of Weistritz and Glatzer Neiße and the flat to slightly undulating foreland of the Sudeten hills. Most of the time you cycle on asphalted narrow country roads with little traffic and lined with nice old avenue trees, on forest tracks and bicycle paths.

1. day  Wroclaw (Breslau) arrival

We recommend to arrive early, it is worth it! You should discover the marvellous old town of Breslau individually. Arrival by train possible/parking at the hotel possible.

2. day  Bad Altheide about 30 km

You go by bus through the countryside of Lower Silesia to the border of the Czech Republic to the skiing village Grunwald located at an altitude of 860 m. It is wonderful to start cycling here. The typical mesas glitter while you visit the vast highmoor. Through green forests and avenues with dense foliage you cycle downhill via Bad Reinerz – one of the oldest and most famous spas of the Sudeten (nowadays well-known for the Chopin festival) to the picturesque spa Bad Altheide.

3. day  Patschkau about 65 km

Your cycling stretch of today is characterized by single farms, dreamy villages and narrow avenues of fruit trees. Enjoy the charme of Glatz! The gothic bridge of Glatz goes for the little sister of the Karlsbridge of Prague. You cycle through the popular place of pilgrimage Wartha past the magnificent palace of Kamenz, built according to an extravagant design of Karl Friedrich Schinkel. At the end of the day you will be filled with enthusiasm by the historic Patschkau, where you stay in a small hotel with garden at the outskirts of the town.

4. day  Ziegenhals 53 km

Twice you cross the Polish/Czech border today and there is much to see! Visit palace Johannisberg (13. Century) . It was the centre of Silesian music in the age of baroque. The view back to Poland is wonderful. You cycle on romantic tracks along the borderline, pass waggons loaded with hay, poultry and other domestic animals by the side of the road. In Poland again you cycle to the hotel in Ziegenhals. The very beautiful market place of Ziegenhals fascinates because of the houses of renaissance and baroque.

5. day  Jägerndorf 65 km

A romantic day lies ahead. You cycle through flat sometimes slightly undulating countryside, past countless stone crosses and shrines which marked the paths of pilgrimage in the past. You discover hidden, almost mystically concealed historic monuments. A special attraction is waiting for you: a ride on the narrow-gauge railway! You enjoy the last kilometres cycling to the pretty old town of Jägerndorf , where you can find colourful newly renovated houses of the art nouveau.

6. day  Grätz 51 km

Look forward to the highlight of today. You visit the historic small town of Troppau, the old capital of Czech Silesia. In Grätz you will be attracted by the renaissance palace, where Beethoven, Liszt, Paganini and Wagner were guests, as well as by your hotel with swimmingpool, sauna and fitness room.

7. day  Breslau 28 km

Today you leave the country of the Sudeten and cycle to the palace Krawarn (17. Century) – it had been the residence of the aristocratic family von Eichendorff for a long time. Afterwards transfer back to Breslau.

8. day  Breslau departure

You may stay for the first and/or last night in Krakau instead of Breslau. There are favourable flight connections from/to Krakau. We will book the transfer to your group for you! You may do the bicycle trip in the Dunajec valley before or after this trip in the country of the Sudeten.
