Salzburg - Vienna
duration: 9 days

dates of arrival:
18.05.2012 - 15.10.2012 daily

3 rivers, 2 world cities, 1 dream

What a pleasure! On even trails, the rivers Salzach, Inn and Danube take you to two famous towns: Salzburg and Vienna. Real highlights can be witnessed right from your bikes: The Danube’s loop by Schlögen, the wild and romantic landscape of the Strudengau and the lovely Wachau, blessed with wine. On your way, you will discover beautiful towns like Burghausen with its castle, Enns, Austria’s oldest town, Passau, where the three rivers meet, Linz, the European Capital of Culture 2009 and finally, Melk, part of the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage. We recommend staying an additional night in Salzburg and Vienna, to give you enough time to discover the riches of both towns.

1. day  Arriving in Salzburg

Travel to Salzburg individually by car, train or airplane with Germanwings or Air Berlin. No matter which means of transport you choose, the festival town Salzburg receives you with all of its charm and its top class sights. Since 1997, the old town of Salzburg and Schönbrunn castle belong to the UNESCO’s World Cultural heritage.

2. day  Salzburg - Burghausen, 55 km

You will pass a wonderful day on your bike cycling in a comfortable pace along the Salzach to Burghausen. Here, the river flows on the German-Austrian border. Marvel at the castle situated on the mountain range above the old town of Burghausen. With a length of 1043 metres, the fortification is the longest one in Europe and according to the Guinness Book of World Records, it is even the longest one of the world.

3. day  Burghausen – Schärding (ca. 68 km)

Another river will host you today. From the mouth of the Salzach on, the Inn-bike trail takes you to Obernberg. A worthwhile break should be spent in this thousand-years-old jewel with one of the most beautiful market places of Austria. Past the monastery of Reichersberg, you will then continue your way to Schärding.

4. day  Schärding - Schlögen 59 km

5. day  Schärding - Linz 54 km

Even trails take you past Wilhering monastery to the Danube market in Aschach and to Linz. The castle of Linz, the old town hall, the Holy Trinity column, Mozart
s house, Martin’s church and the New Cathedral are definitely worth the visit.

6. day  Linz - Ardagger/ Grein 65 km

Enns, the oldest town of Austria, magnificent bike trails on both sides of the Danube and Grein, a proud settlement from the 16th and 17th century with impressive Baroque facades wait for you today.

7. day  Grein - Melk/ Emmersdorf 55 km

Today’s route impresses with the unique natural and cultural landscape of the Strudengau. The Baroque pilgrimage church Maria Taferl and Melk with its famous Benedictine monastery are part of it.

8. day  Krems – Wien, 40 km + train ride

What a fantastical cycling day to end this trip with! The beautiful landscape of the Wachau will be crossed comfortably on the Danube bike trail. Steep hillsides seam both sides of the trail, while excellent wines grow on terraces encircled by stone walls. Cosy inns and wine restaurants are welcome occasions for a break. You will leave your rental bike in Krems to enjoy the last kilometres into the centre of Vienna by train (train ride to be planned individually).

9. day  Leaving Vienna

How fast time passed! We book additional nights for you if you wish to enjoy Vienna a little longer. The imperial hofburg, the Stephan’s cathedral, the state opera, the castle theatre and the town hall, the colourfully painted house of Hundertwasser and the giant wheel wait for your visit.
